Independent Filmmaker Project
The Gotham Film & Media Institute (also simply the Gotham), formerly known as the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), is a membership-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to independent film. It offers programs that assist independent filmmakers in connecting with film-industry professionals and, ultimately, audiences, and presents the annual Gotham Awards. It was founded in 1979 by independent filmmakers as the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP). Under the IFP umbrella, the New York City organization has over 5,000 members. Affiliated regional organizations are based in Chicago, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Phoenix, Arizona, Phoenix, and Seattle. Since March 2019, Jeffrey Sharp has been the executive director of the organization. In January 2021, the IFP announced its rebranding as the Gotham Film & Media Institute. Jeffrey Sharp
Jeffrey Sharp is an American feature film and TV producer and Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute (formerly Independent Filmmaker Project). Sharp has produced a series of Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning and nominated films, including '' Boys Don't Cry'', '' You Can Count on Me'', ''Nicholas Nickleby'', and ''Proof''. Additional credits as Producer include: '' A Home at the End of the World'', '' The Night Listener'', ''Evening'', and The Yellow Birds. Independent Film
An independent film, independent movie, indie film, or indie movie is a feature film or short film that is produced outside the major film studio system, in addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies (or, in some cases, distributed by major companies). Independent films are sometimes distinguishable by their content and style and the way in which the filmmakers' personal artistic vision is realized. Usually, but not always, independent films are made with considerably lower budgets than major studio films. The Gotham Awards () are American film awards, presented annually to the makers of independent films at a ceremony in New York City, the city first nicknamed "Gotham" by native son Washington Irving, in an issue of ''Salmagundi'', published on November 11, 1807.
