Independence (fireboat)
The Philadelphia Fire Department started operating the fireboat ''Independence'' in 2007. The vessel cost $5 million, $4.5 million of which came from a FEMA Port Security Grant. On September 10, 2010, both the ''Independence'' and a smaller fireboat, the ''Fireboat Seven'', from Westville, New Jersey responded to a dock fire in Paulsboro, New Jersey. ''Fireboat Seven'' had arrived first, and put the fire out, without assistance. When the ''Independence'' received orders to turn around, when it was near the dock, she reversed quickly, generating a wake so large it caused ''fireboat seven'' to alide with shore-side equipment. Westville's insurance adjuster determined that ''Fireboat Seven'' was damaged beyond repair. After a failure to reach an out-of-court settlement, Westville sued Philadelphia. Philadelphia countersued. On July 30, 2014, Westville initiated a lawsuit in Federal Court. Philadelphia finally settled, on March 31, 2016, for $117,000. See also * Fireboats of ... Philadelphia Fire Department
The Philadelphia Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) to the city of Philadelphia. The PFD's official mission is to protect public safety by quick and professional response to emergencies and through the promotion of sound emergency prevention measures. Fireboat
A fireboat or fire-float is a specialized watercraft with pumps and nozzles designed for fighting shoreline and shipboard fires. The first fireboats, dating to the late 18th century, were tugboats, retrofitted with firefighting equipment. Older designs derived from tugboats and modern fireboats more closely resembling seafaring ships can both be found in service today. Some departments would give their multi-purpose craft the title of "fireboat" also. They are frequently used for fighting fires on docks and shore side warehouses as they can directly attack fires in the supporting underpinnings of these structures. They also have an effectively unlimited supply of water available, pumping directly from below the hull. Fireboats can be used to assist shore-based firefighters when other water is in low supply or is unavailable, for example, due to earthquake breakage of water mains, as happened in San Francisco due to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. FEMA Port Security Grant
Since 2002, the Department of Homeland Security has provided Port Security Grants to ports within the United States, to build fireboats. These vessels are thought to help keep the entire United States safer, because, in addition to fighting local fires, they are all equipped to help counter nuclear fallout, chemical weapons and biological weapons. The grants are made under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, one of the agencies under DHS, provided $100 million worth of grants in 2015.
