Incidence (geometry)
In geometry, an incidence relation is a heterogeneous relation that captures the idea being expressed when phrases such as "a point ''lies on'' a line" or "a line is ''contained in'' a plane" are used. The most basic incidence relation is that between a point, , and a line, , sometimes denoted . If the pair is called a ''flag''. There are many expressions used in common language to describe incidence (for example, a line ''passes through'' a point, a point ''lies in'' a plane, etc.) but the term "incidence" is preferred because it does not have the additional connotations that these other terms have, and it can be used in a symmetric manner. Statements such as "line intersects line " are also statements about incidence relations, but in this case, it is because this is a shorthand way of saying that "there exists a point that is incident with both line and line ". Geometry
Geometry (; ) is, with arithmetic, one of the oldest branches of mathematics. It is concerned with properties of space such as the distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a ''geometer''. In order theory, a field of mathematics, an incidence algebra is an associative algebra, defined for every locally finite partially ordered set and commutative ring with unity. Subalgebras called reduced incidence algebras give a natural construction of various types of generating functions used in combinatorics and number theory. Incidence Matrix
In mathematics, an incidence matrix is a logical matrix that shows the relationship between two classes of objects, usually called an incidence relation. In geometry, a set of points are said to be concyclic (or cocyclic) if they lie on a common circle. All concyclic points are at the same distance from the center of the circle. Three points in the plane that do not all fall on a straight line are concyclic, but four or more such points in the plane are not necessarily concyclic. Ceva's Theorem
In Euclidean geometry, Ceva's theorem is a theorem about triangles. Menelaus Theorem
Menelaus's theorem, named for Menelaus of Alexandria, is a proposition about triangles in plane geometry. In geometry, lines in a plane or higher-dimensional space are said to be concurrent if they intersect at a single point. They are in contrast to parallel lines. In mathematics, a projective range is a set of points in projective geometry considered in a unified fashion. A projective range may be a projective line or a conic.
