Macrocheira
The Japanese spider crab (''Macrocheira kaempferi'') is a species of marine crab that lives in the waters around Japan. It has the largest known leg-span of any arthropod. It goes through three main larval stages along with a prezoeal stage to grow to its great size. The genus ''Macrocheira'' contains multiple species. Two fossil species of this genus have been found, ''M. ginzanensis'' and ''M. yabei'', both from the Miocene of Japan. Its diverse taxonomic history is an important part of what these creatures are and how they evolved to be what they are today. They are sought by crab fisheries, and are considered a delicacy in Japan. Conservation efforts aim to protect these creatures and their population from overfishing. The Japanese spider crab is similar in appearance to the much smaller European spider crab ''(Maja squinado)'', though the latter, while within the same superfamily, belongs to a different family, the Majidae. Description The Japanese spider crab has the g ...

Achaeopsis
''Achaeopsis spinulosa'', the hotlips spider crab, is a species of crab in the family Inachidae, found only around the South African coast. It is the only species in the genus ''Achaeopsis''. Distribution The crab is found from False Bay to Durban, subtidally to . It is endemic to this region. Description ''Achaeopsis spinulosa'' is commonly known as the hotlips spider crab because of the vivid red marking around its mouth. It is a small spider crab with relatively long but quite sturdy legs. It may grow to across. Its carapace is rounded, tapering to a blunt tip. Its pincers are raggedly striped in white and red. Ecology The crab decorates its body with sponges, hydroids, or algae, improving its camouflage. It is seldom seen without some form of decoration. It is often found among striped anemones and on sea fan Alcyonacea, or soft corals, are an order of corals. In addition to the fleshy soft corals, the order Alcyonacea now contains all species previously known as " ...

Inachus Dorsettensis
''Inachus dorsettensis'', commonly known as the scorpion spider crab, is a species of crab generally found on loose substrates (stony bottoms to mud) from depth down to about . It is found along the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean from Norway to South Africa, and also in the Mediterranean Sea. Description They are usually seen covered with sponge Sponges, the members of the phylum Porifera (; meaning 'pore bearer'), are a basal animal clade as a sister of the diploblasts. They are multicellular organisms that have bodies full of pores and channels allowing water to circulate through t ... which they apply themselves. The carapace of a fully grown male is roughly long and slightly narrower than it is long. ''I. dorsettensis'' resembles the closely related species '' Inachus phalangium'', but has more prominent spines on the carapace. They molt, with the intermolting period being shorter the warmer the water they reside in is. References Majoidea Crabs of the Atlant ...

Crab
Crabs are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, which typically have a very short projecting "tail" (abdomen) ( el, βραχύς , translit=brachys = short, / = tail), usually hidden entirely under the thorax. They live in all the world's oceans, in freshwater, and on land, are generally covered with a thick exoskeleton, and have a single pair of pincers. They first appeared during the Jurassic Period. Description Crabs are generally covered with a thick exoskeleton, composed primarily of highly mineralized chitin, and armed with a pair of chelae (claws). Crabs vary in size from the pea crab, a few millimeters wide, to the Japanese spider crab, with a leg span up to . Several other groups of crustaceans with similar appearances – such as king crabs and porcelain crabs – are not true crabs, but have evolved features similar to true crabs through a process known as carcinisation. Environment Crabs are found in all of the world's oceans, as well as in fresh w ...
