''In the Hills of California'' is a live album by folk singer/guitarist Greg Brown, released in 2004. History This live album is subtitled ''Live from the Kate Wolf Music Festival 1997-2003''. All proceeds from this release were donated to charity. Eight of the tracks are previously unreleased and were taken from performances at the annual festival over the years. Greg Brown (born Gregory Dane Brown July 2, 1949) is an American folk musician from Iowa. Early life Brown was born into a musical family, and his father was a Pentecostal minister. He grew up in the Hacklebarney region of southwestern Iowa, which he describes as "hill country." Red House Records
Red House Records is an independent folk and Americana record label in St. Paul, Minnesota. The label was founded in 1983 by Bob Feldman after seeing a performance by Iowa folk singer Greg Brown. Origin The label is named for a farmhouse in Iowa where Brown was living when he started it. After Brown's albums ''44 & 66'' and ''The Iowa Waltz'' were released in 1981 and 1982, it briefly went dormant until he met Bob Feldman in 1983. Feldman took over operation of the record label, while Brown focused on his musical endeavors, as he had just signed on to regularly perform on the radio program ''A Prairie Home Companion''. Kate Wolf (born Kathryn Louise Allen; January 27, 1942 – December 10, 1986) was an American folk singer and songwriter."Kate Wolf", pp. 533–534, in '' All Music Guide'', 2nd edition (1994), edited by Michael Erlewine. Nina Gerber is an American guitarist who first came to attention when she accompanied singer-songwriter Kate Wolf from 1979 until Wolf's death in 1986. Gerber was born and raised in Sebastopol, California. In 1975, Gerber was still at high school when she saw Kate Wolf perform at a Sebastopol pizza parlor, and decided she wanted to play with her, which she first achieved in 1978. Gerber has collaborated with many other artists, mostly folk musicians, including Karla Bonoff. She released her first album, ''Not Before Noon'', in 2001. Shawn Colvin (born Shawna Lee Colvin, January 10, 1956) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. While Colvin has been a solo recording artist for decades, she is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song "Sunny Came Home". Early life Colvin was born Shawna Lee Colvin in Vermillion, South Dakota, and spent her youth in Carbondale, Illinois and London, Ontario, Canada. She is the second of four children. She learned to play guitar at the age of 10 and grew up listening to her father's collection of music, which included artists such as Pete Seeger and the Kingston Trio. Garnet Rogers (born May 1955) is a Canadian folk musician, singer, songwriter and composer. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario with roots in Nova Scotia. He began his professional career working with his older brother, folk musician Stan Rogers, and arranging Stan's music.
