''In Beauty It Is Finished'' is a three-act play by mid-twentieth century Australian playwright George Landen Dann. It was his first major play. Synopsis ''In Beauty It Is Finished'' follows the story of Marion, a young white woman who lives for alternating years in Brisbane and with her parents on Moreton Island. The only other inhabitants of the island are Indigenous Australians and a lonely fisherman. Controversially, Marion begins a love affair with a "half-caste" boy named Tom. The play follows the effects the affair has on the surrounding family and community. ''In Beauty It Is Finished'' deals with themes of racism, identity, isolation and community as well as social expectations and ideals. George Landen Dann
George Landen Dann (1 January 1904 – 6 June 1977) was an Australian playwright, writer, and draftsman. He is best known for a number of award-winning and critically acclaimed plays such as '' In Beauty It Is Finished'', ''Fountains Beyond'', ''Caroline Chisholm'' and ''The Orange Grove''. Dann wrote dozens of published and unpublished plays over the course of his lifetime. Originally writing plays for the amateur dramatic society at Sandgate, Queensland, Dann was a particularly shy and reclusive person, and even though he wrote part-time, his more popular plays were widely performed by amateur theatre companies around Australia. Moreton Island
Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is an island on the eastern side of Moreton Bay on the coast of South East Queensland, Australia. The Coral Sea lies on the east coast of the island. Moreton Island lies northeast of the Queensland capital, Brisbane. 95% of the island is contained within a national park and a popular destination for day trippers, four wheel driving, camping, recreational angling and whale watching and a 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane. It is the third largest sand island in the world. Together with Fraser Island, Moreton Island forms the largest sand structure in the world. Ngugi People
The Ngugi are an Aboriginal Australian people, one of three Quandamooka peoples, and the traditional inhabitants of Moreton Island. Language The Ngugi language was called ''guwar'', a term that, by extension served as one of the names for the people, reflects their word for "no" (''gowarliosislipotinoionalop''). It was mutually intelligible with the other Moreton bay languages: Tom Petrie, who had mastered the Brisbane area Turrbal language could, according to his daughter's reminiscences, understand the speech of Ngugi people from the island. According to Anthony Jefferies, Guwar is a variety of Bundjalung, the population being a residue of speakers of that language who, when the rest of the Bundjalung were forced south as a result of the expansion of the incoming Yugara, much of whose terminology was then adopted into Guwar. Aboriginals Protection And Restriction Of The Sale Of Opium Act 1897
The ''Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897'', long name ''A Bill to make Provision for the better Protection and Care of the Aboriginal and Half-caste Inhabitants of the Colony, and to make more effectual Provision for Restricting the Sale and Distribution of Opium'', was an Act of the Parliament of Queensland. It was the first instrument of separate legal control over Aboriginal peoples, and was more restrictive than any contemporary legislation operating in other states. It also implemented the creation of Aboriginal reserves to control the dwelling places and movement of the people. Amendments and various pieces of replacement legislation were passed in the 20th century, but it was not until passage of the ''Aboriginal Land Act 1991'' and '' Torres Strait Islander Act 1991'' that the main features of the 1897 Act regarding control of land and people were replaced. Barbara Sisley
Barbara Sisley (1878–1945) was an Australian teacher and theatre director in Queensland, Australia. She founded and operated the Brisbane Repertory Theatre. Early life and education Sisley was born on 19 March 1878 at Streatham, London, one of three daughters of Thomas Alexander Sisley, civil service clerk, and his wife Susan, née Sisley. Sisley moved to Australia when she was 11. She was educated at Queen's College, Melbourne and Manuel College in Hawthorn. Career Sisley became one of Brisbane's first speech and drama instructors when she moved there in 1916, working at St Margaret's, Stuartholme and Somerville House. In the early-1900s Sisley helped establish the Young Women's Christian Association Drama Group and the Brisbane Shakespeare Society, where they performed an annual play. Nicholas Birns
Nicholas Birns is a scholar of literature, including fantasy and Australian literature. As a Tolkien scholar he has written on a variety of topics including The Scouring of the Shire and Tolkien's biblical sources. His analysis of the writings of Anthony Powell and Roberto Bolaño has been admired by scholars. Biography Nicholas Birns took his BA at Columbia University in 1988.
