''Imagineering'' (from "imagination" and "engineering") is the implementation of creative ideas in practical form. The word was registered as a trademark of Disney Enterprises, Inc. in 1990, and forms part of the title of Disney's research and development arm, Walt Disney Imagineering. The word was actually coined by Alcoa around 1940, and appeared widely in numerous publications of several disciplines such as urban design, geography and politics, evolutionary economics, corporate culture and futures studies. Earliest usages During World War II, Alcoa created an internal "Imagineering" program to encourage innovative usage of aluminum in order to keep up with demand. Imagineering, based in Glen Rock, New Jersey, was an American in-house studio of Absolute Entertainment. Many notable video games developed for Absolute include '' A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia'', ''Battle Tank'', '' Super Battletank'' and '' The Rescue of Princess Blobette''. They are also best known for their video games developed for third-party publishers, such as Acclaim Entertainment, Atari Corporation, Activision, Hi Tech Expressions, Gametek and THQ. John David "Jodee" Rich (born 1960) is an Australian businessman. He was a founder of the defunct mobile phone provider One.Tel and the software distributor Imagineering Australia. He is now the CEO and founder of social analytics and influence measurement provider PeopleBrowsr and the creator of new TLDs dotCEO, dotBest and dotKred. Background and education Rich was born to a German Jewish father, Steven Rich, who, in 1963, settled in Australia to manage Hunter Douglas, a Venetian blind manufacturer, and his wife, Gail, born in Australia. Steven Rich went on to create the Traveland travel agency, was the deputy chairman of the Salvation Army in 1971 and was awarded an Order of Australia in 2001. The Imagineering Foundation is a British charity organisation that encourages schoolchildren aged 8–16 to engage with engineering. History It was formed in 1999 by a group of The Midlands, England, Midlands engineers who were concerned about a perceived lowering of interest in engineering activities by schoolchildren, leading to a skills shortage in the STEM fields, STEM subjects. It was launched as an educational charity on 31 July 2001. The website was developed in 2004, with educational material for the clubs. Structure It is based in Warwickshire. It also has a substantial online presence with a website built so tutors can access project material. Imagineering was a software distribution company founded by Jodee Rich in the early 1980s. It grew rapidly before running into financial trouble in the late 1980s. Imagineering was sold to First Pacific in 1990 at which time Jodee Rich left the business. Graham Pickles, managing director of sister company Tech Pacific, took the helm of the group and merged the two businesses together under the Tech Pacific banner in 1990.
