Illinois PGA Championship
The Illinois PGA Championship is a golf tournament that is conducted by the Illinois PGA (Professional Golfers' Association). The 54-hole, stroke play Championship conducted over three days is the premier member event on the Illinois PGA calendar. The tournament is open to all "Class A" Illinois PGA Professionals in good standing with the PGA of America. History The first Illinois PGA Championship was held in 1922 and won by Eddie Loos. In addition to the first place purse money, the winner is awarded the Jim Kemper Cup, which was donated by Jim Kemper, the former president and chairman of the board of Kemper Insurance Company. Method of play The Illinois PGA Championship is a 54-hole stroke-play event. Following 36 holes of play, the field is cut to the low 50 scores plus ties. In the event of a tie for the Championship, there is a three-hole, total stroke playoff. If the contestants remain tied after three (3) holes, the playoff will continue on a sudden death basis. Errie Ball
Samuel Henry "Errie" Ball (November 14, 1910July 2, 2014) was a Welsh-American professional golfer who competed at the inaugural Augusta National golf tournament in 1934 (now known as the Masters Tournament). He was the last living person to compete in the first Masters and died at the age of 103. Early life Ball was born in Bangor, Wales, in 1910. He acquired the nickname "Errie" from his family's French maid who was tasked with caring for him and performing household duties. She had trouble pronouncing "Henry", hence the name Errie. Dick Hart (golfer)
Richard Byrd Hart (October 20, 1935 – April 10, 2013) was an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1960s. At the 1963 PGA Championship, Hart led after both 18 and 36 holes (66 & 72) but faded in the third and fourth rounds (76 & 74) to finish the tournament at T-17 — his best finish in a major championship. Hart's one tour victory came at the 1965 Azalea Open Invitational. He defeated Phil Rodgers on the eighth hole of a sudden death playoff. The playoff remains one of the longest in PGA Tour history. A 43-year club pro at Hinsdale Golf Club in Hinsdale, Illinois, Hart was inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 1990. Hart died in Covington, Louisiana in 2013. George Keyes (September 17, 1919 – February 11, 2010) was an American professional golfer and two-time winner (1956 and 1967) of the Illinois PGA Championship. Tony Holguin
Tony Holguin (October 18, 1926 – May 14, 2009) was an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour. Holguin learned the game of golf while growing up in San Antonio, Texas during the Great Depression. His family, which was of Mexican descent, had no money and could not afford an automobile. He spent much time at home, practicing his putting. Holguin served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He won the San Antonio City Championship in 1946 and 1947. He turned professional in 1948. Holguin won the Mexican Open in 1949 and 1950. His best finish in a major championship was T17 at PGA Championship in 1957. The biggest win of his career came in 1953 at the Texas Open. Rick Dalpos (born April 25, 1957) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour. Dalpos joined the PGA Tour in 1983 and played on Tour until 1989 with little success. His best finish during those years was when he finished in a tie for tenth in the 1987 Los Angeles Open. He joined the Nationwide Tour in 1990 and enjoyed more success, recording four top-10 finishes. In 1991, he picked up his first win on Tour at the Ben Hogan Greater Ozarks Open. He picked up his second win the following year at the Ben Hogan Pensacola Open. That win helped him finish 8th on the money list which earned him his PGA Tour card for 1993. Kemper Lakes Golf Club is a private country club in the central United States, located in Ela Township, Lake County, outside Kildeer, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago. } Gary Mathieu Groh (born October 11, 1944) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s. Groh was born in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Michigan State University and turned pro in 1968. Groh played on the PGA Tour from 1971 to 1978 and won one event. His career year was 1975 when he won the Hawaiian Open, earned $68,296 and finished 31st on the money list. His best finish in a major championship was T18 at the U.S. Open in 1975.
