Ilene Strizver
Ilene Strizver is a noted typographic educator, author, designer and founder of The Type Studio in Westport, Connecticut. Her book,'' Type Rules! The designer’s guide to professional typography'', is now in its 4th edition. Life and career Strizver was the Director of Typeface Development for International Typeface Corporation (ITC), where she developed more than 300 text and display typefaces with such respected and world-renowned type designers as Sumner Stone, Erik Spiekermann, Jill Bell, Jim Parkinson, Tim Donaldson, and the late Phill Grimshaw. Prior to ITC, she was Creative & Production Director of ''Upper & lowercase (U&lc''), the award-winning international journal for typography and typographic design. She worked with such legendary type icons as Ed Benguiat, Aaron Burns and Herb Lubalin. Typographic
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing ( leading), and letter-spacing (tracking), as well as adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning). The term ''typography'' is also applied to the style, arrangement, and appearance of the letters, numbers, and symbols created by the process. International Typeface Corporation
The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) was a type manufacturer founded in New York in 1970 by Aaron Burns, Herb Lubalin and Edward Rondthaler. The company was one of the world's first type foundries to have no history in the production of metal type. It is now a wholly owned brand or subsidiary of Monotype Imaging. History The company was founded to design, license and market typefaces for filmsetting and computer set types internationally. The company issued both new designs and revivals of older or classic faces, invariably re-cut to be suitable for digital typesetting use and produced in families of different weights. Sumner Stone
Sumner Stone (born 9 June 1945 in Venice, Florida) is a typeface designer and graphic artist. He notably designed ITC Stone while working for Adobe. A specimen of ITC Stone is shown at his personal website. Career Stone studied at Reed College, graduating with a degree in sociology in 1967, and earned an MA in Mathematics from Sonoma State University in 1977. Erik Spiekermann
Erik Spiekermann (born 30 May 1947 in Stadthagen, Lower Saxony) is a German typographer, designer and writer. He is an honorary professor at the University of the Arts Bremen and ArtCenter College of Design. Biography Spiekermann studied art history at Berlin's Free University, funding himself by running a letterpress printing press in the basement of his house. Between 1972 and 1979, he worked as a freelance graphic designer in London before returning to Berlin and founding MetaDesign with two partners. In 1989, he and his then-wife Joan Spiekermann started FontShop, the first mail-order distributor for digital fonts. FontShop International followed and now publishes the ''FontFont'' range of typefaces. MetaDesign combined clean, teutonic-looking information design and complex corporate design systems for clients like BVG (Berlin Transit), Düsseldorf Airport, Audi, Volkswagen and Heidelberg Printing, amongst others. Phill Grimshaw
Phill Grimshaw (1 February 1950 – 27 July 1998) was an English typeface designer and calligrapher who designed dozens of fonts for Letraset and the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) in the 1980s and 1990s. Biography Grimshaw was born on 1 February 1950 in Bolton. He studied art at Bolton College, where he was taught by the typographer Tony Forster, with whom he would later become close friends. Forster encouraged Grimshaw to apply to London's Royal College of Art (RCA). Grimshaw completed a master's degree between 1972 and 1975 at the RCA, where he met David Hockney and John Gorham. He returned to Lancashire after graduating from the RCA and opened a commercial lettering studio focusing on both typography and calligraphy. Ephram Edward Benguiat (; October 27, 1927October 15, 2020) was an American type designer and lettering artist. He designed over 600 typefaces, including Tiffany, Bookman, Panache, Souvenir, Edwardian Script, and the eponymous Benguiat and Benguiat Gothic. He was also known for his designs or redesigns of the logotypes for ''Esquire'', ''The New York Times'', ''Playboy'', ''McCall’s'', ''Reader’s Digest'', ''Photography'', '' Look'', ''Sports Illustrated'', ''The Star-Ledger'', ''The San Diego Tribune'', AT&T, A&E, Coke, Estée Lauder, Ford, and others. Herb Lubalin
Herbert F. Lubalin (; March 17, 1918 – May 24, 1981) was an American graphic designer. He collaborated with Ralph Ginzburg on three of Ginzburg's magazines: ''Eros'', ''Fact'', and ''Avant Garde''. He designed the typeface, ITC Avant Garde, for the last of these. Biography Herb Lubalin was born March 17, 1918 in New York. There he lived with his parents, older sister, and twin brother. His parents were very appreciative of the arts and were supportive of his artistic capabilities and talent. Early into his education, his parents realized that he was color blind.
