''Il fidanzamento'' (''The Engagement'') is a 1975 Italian romantic comedy-drama film directed by Giovanni Grimaldi. It is based on the novel with the same name written by Goffredo Parise. Plot Catania. Luigi Manozzi is a public official who has been engaged for 8 years to Mirella Guglielmi, whom he treats as the object of his sexual desires without however deciding to marry her. Mussia, the girl's mother, aware of her daughter's situation, constantly teases Luigi to push him to do his duty, even though the girl does not need to contract a shotgun marriage. After being caught red-handed during coitus, Luigi slips away from Mirella's family for fear of being cornered by Mussia who, instead of blaming him for the fait accompli, proposes to help him financially; having no other arguments to procrastinate, Luigi works on a pretext to be transferred to L'Aquila while waiting for the situation to evolve in his favor. Giovanni Grimaldi
Giovanni Grimaldi (14 November 1917 – 25 February 2001) was an Italian screenwriter, journalist and film director. He was sometimes credited as Gianni Grimaldi. Biography Born in Catania, Sicily, Grimaldi entered the cinema industry in 1952 as a screenwriter of a large number of often highly successful films, frequently working together with Bruno Corbucci. Since 1964 he became a prolific director of comedy films, often working with Lando Buzzanca and with the couple Franco and Ciccio. Aside from films, Grimaldi was a journalist, a collaborator and even the director of several Italian humor magazines such as ''Trilussa'', ''Candido'' and ''Marc'Aurelio''. Carlo Sposito (1 May 1924 – 9 September 1984) was an Italian character actor, sometimes credited as Carletto Sposito. Born in Palermo, he was among the most active actors in the post-war Italian genre cinema. He was also pretty active on stage, radio and television. He died at 60 of myocardial infarction, in Rome. Daniela Giordano (7 November 1947– 16 December 2022) was an Italian actress, who is foremost known for her appearances in the Italian exploitation cinema in the late 1960s and in the 1970s. She is not to be confused with the stage actress and director of the same name. Riccardo Garrone (1 November 1926 – 14 March 2016) was an Italian actor, voice actor and director. Biography Garrone began his acting career in 1949 and attended the Silvio d'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts. He appeared in more than 140 films from 1949 until his retirement in 2014. He made his debut in the film ''Adam and Eve'' directed by Mario Mattoli. He also worked in several theatre productions alongside other actors such as Vittorio Gassman, Diana Torrieri and Elena Zareschi. Ennio Balbo (18 April 1922 – 18 June 1989) was an Italian film, television and voice actor. Biography Born in Naples, Balbo made his debut on stage immediately after the Second World War alongside Paola Borboni and Lamberto Picasso in Luigi Pirandello's ''Così è se vi pare''.
