Ijok By-election, 2007
The 2007 Ijok by-election was held on 28 April 2007. The seat of Ijok in the State Legislative Assembly of Selangor, Malaysia, fell vacant after the death of the incumbent, K. Sivalingam, on 4 April 2007 from a heart attack. Sivalingam was a member of the state executive council as well as the deputy chairman of the Selangor state Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), a component party of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. The by-election was won by the BN candidate K. Parthiban, with a 1,850-vote majority over the opposition candidate, Khalid Ibrahim. Background State assembly seat N.08 Ijok lies in parliamentary seat P.096 Kuala Selangor. As of the 2004 General Elections, Ijok was a Malay-majority seat (50.6%), followed by Indians (28.3%), Chinese (20.9%) and others (0.2%). In the 2004 election, the late K. Ijok
Ijok is a mukim in Kuala Selangor District, Selangor, Malaysia. It is located along Federal route . Sited at a junction that leads to the bigger and more developed Bestari Jaya (Batang Berjuntai), Pekan Ijok is, in a sense, a 'cowboy town' with a main street lined with shops and small buildings on both sides. Demographics The Malays here are largely of Javanese stock, and claim their forefathers from Indonesia founded the town in the early 1900s. Many are smallholders or work on their own land while some work in local shops and factories. The Chinese came to do business or to open vegetable farms and have since stayed to set up home here. Likewise, the Indians have also found home here after the earlier settlers came to work in the rubber plantations. Guthrie Group Limited ( ms, Kumpulan Guthrie Berhad) was a Singaporean-Malaysian company that primarily dealt with plantations. It merged with three other plantation groups to form the world's largest plantation company with the name of Sime Darby Berhad. Guthrie was founded in Singapore in 1821 by Alexander Guthrie as the first British trading company in Southeast Asia. Guthrie introduced rubber and oil palm in Malaysia in 1896 and 1924, respectively. Early history Alexander Guthrie was born in the parish of Menmuir in Angus, Scotland, in 1796, son of David Guthrie of Burnside and his wife Margaret Guthrie, née Guthrie.
