Iisalmen maalaiskunta was a municipality in Eastern Finland in Kuopio Province. The municipality was founded in 1873. Before the year 1922 the municipality included also Sonkajärvi and Vieremä. The municipality was consolidated with the city of Iisalmi in the beginning of year 1970. In 1963 there was 14 079 inhabitants in Iisalmen maalaiskunta. Kuopio Province
The Kuopio Province ( fi, Kuopion lääni, sv, Kuopio län, russian: Куопиоская губерния) was a province of Finland from 1831 to 1997. The province was named after its capital, city of Kuopio. History The predecessor of province was the County of Savolax and Karelia, which was established in 1775 when Finland was integrated part of Sweden. As a consequence of the tumultuous conflicts of the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden had allied itself with the Russian Empire, United Kingdom and the other parties of the Fourth Coalition against Napoleonic France. However, following the treaty of Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, Russia made peace with France and left the coalition. This enabled Russia in 1808 to challenge Sweden in the Finnish War, over the control of Finland. In the Treaty of Fredrikshamn on September 17, 1809 Sweden was obliged to cede all its territory in Finland, east of the Torne River, to Russia. Sonkajärvi
Sonkajärvi (; formerly known as ''Rutakko'') is a municipality of Finland. It is located in Northern Savonia region, north of Kuopio. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The coat of arms of Sonkajärvi is inspired by the many watermills in the region, which the picture of the water wheel refers to, and the slash-and-burn cultivation of the past, which the flames on top of the wheel refer to. The coat of arms was designed by Ahti Hammar, and the Sonkajärvi municipal council approved it at its meeting on July 15, 1954. The Ministry of the Interior approved the coat of arms for use on October 15 of the same year. Geography Neighbouring municipalities are Iisalmi, Kajaani, Lapinlahti, Rautavaara, Sotkamo and Vieremä. Seppo Arimo Kääriäinen (born 29 March 1948 in Iisalmen maalaiskunta) is a Finland, Finnish politician of the Centre Party (Finland), Centre Party and Doctor in Social Sciences. He served as the Minister of Defence (Finland), Minister of Defence of Finland between from 24 June 2003 to 19 April 2007.
