Ignacio Alviso
Juan Ignacio Alviso (1772–1848) was a Californio ranchero and soldier. He is the namesake of Alviso, a neighborhood of the city of San Jose, California. Biography Born in San Miguel de Horcasitas in what is now the Mexican state of Sonora, three-year-old Ignacio left with his parents Corporal Domingo Alviso (1738–1777) and Maria Angela Trejo (1742–1803), brothers and sister in 1775 on the de Anza Expedition to San Francisco. His father died a year following their arrival. Ignacio served as a soldier in the San Francisco Company from 1805 to 1819. He married Maria Margarita Bernal (1781–1828). In 1838 he was granted Rancho Rincón de Los Esteros. He died in 1848 leaving a large estate. Ignacio Alviso is the uncle of José María Alviso, an early '' alcalde'' of San Jose. Originally an independent town, founded in 1852, today Alviso is San Jose's only waterfront district, primarily residential in nature, with several Silicon Valley tech companies and recreation-oriented businesses. Alviso is named after 19th-century Californio ranchero Ignacio Alviso, who owned the area as part of his Rancho Rincón de Los Esteros. The Guadalupe River separates Alviso from Santa Clara and Sunnyvale to the west, while Coyote Creek separates Alviso from Milpitas to the east. José María Alviso
José María de Jesus Alviso (November 19, 1798 – June 18, 1853) was a Californio ranchero, soldier, and politician. He served as Alcalde of San José (mayor) in 1836 and was the rancho grantee for Rancho Milpitas. Alviso is considered the founder of the city of Milpitas. Biography Alviso was born in 1798 and baptized at Mission Santa Clara. He was the son of Francisco Xavier Alviso and Maria Bojorquez, both of whom arrived in San Francisco as children with their parents from Sonora on the Spanish De Anza Expedition in 1776. His uncle was Ignacio Alviso. José María Alviso served as a soldier in the Spanish- and later Mexican military from 1819 to 1827. In 1826 he married Juana Galindo, daughter of Crisostomo Galindo. Governor José Castro of Alta California granted a large tract of land in what is now Milpitas, California on September 23, 1835 to Alviso. Alviso served as the alcalde of San José in 1836. Californios
Californio (plural Californios) is a term used to designate a Hispanic Californians, Hispanic Californian, especially those descended from Spanish and Mexican settlers of the 17th through 19th centuries.
