''If You Only Knew'' is the second album by American R&B singer Gina Thompson. It was scheduled to be released through Elektra Records/East West Records on September 21, 1999, however it was shelved due to the failure and lack of commercial success for her lead singles, "Ya Di Ya" (#38 U.S. R&B) and "Caught Up". Promotional copies of the album were released limitedly to reviewers and select vendors, as means to spread awareness of the album's existence before its shelving. Gina Thompson
Gina Thompson (born Lugenia Thompson in Vineland, New Jersey, on November 10, 1976) is an American R&B singer. Born to Edward L. Thompson, Sr. and Eugenia Thompson, Gina Thompson began singing at an early age and was signed to her first recording contract with Mercury Records shortly after graduating high school. Recording career ''Nobody Does It Better'' was Gina Thompson's first album. Released in 1996, it featured production by Missy Elliott and Diddy, and featured appearances by Elliott, Diddy, and Craig Mack, among others. Her first single from the album, "The Things That You Do", was a success, peaking at number 41 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 charts, and number 12 on ''Billboard'''s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Contemporary R&B (or simply R&B) is a popular music genre that combines rhythm and blues with elements of pop, soul, funk, hip hop, and electronic music. Hip Hop Soul
Hip hop soul is a subgenre of contemporary R&B music, most popular during the early and mid 1990s, which fuses R&B or soul singing with hip hop musical production. The subgenre had evolved from a previous R&B subgenre, new jack swing, which had incorporated hip-hop influences into R&B music. By contrast, hip hop soul is, as described in ''The Encyclopedia of African American Music'', "quite literally soul singing over hip hop grooves". "Ya Di Ya" is a song by American R&B singer, Gina Thompson. It features guest vocals by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and was released as the lead single from Thompson's unreleased album, '' If You Only Knew'' (1999). The song became a minor hit, where it peaked at #38 on ''Billboard'' Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and scored Thompson her second top 40 R&B hit and Elliott's fifteenth overall top 40 R&B hit. Because of its strong radio airplay and charting outside the United States, a "Rufftime" remix was issued via international pressings of "Ya Di Ya".
