Idylls of the Rat King is a d20 ''Dungeon Crawl Classics'' adventure written for ''Dungeons & Dragons'' by Jeffrey Quinn. For character levels 1-3, DCC #1 pits PCs against a wererat king and his wicked minions. As of 2006, ''Idylls of the Rat King'' has been reprinted three times. The 3rd printing features the art of classic TSR artist, Jim Holloway. The title is a reference to ''Idylls of the King'', a cycle of narrative poems by Alfred Tennyson. Plot In ''Idylls of the Rat King'', goblin bandits have taken up residence in an abandoned mine northwest of Silverton. Someone must get rid of them. But this is no ordinary abandoned mine. It was deliberately barricaded generations ago when the Gannu family, founders of Silverton, discovered an unspeakable evil on its lowest levels. James Holloway (died June 28, 2020) was an artist whose work appeared in role-playing games. Background Jim Holloway was self taught in illustration, although he was able to study some oil paintings by his father. Works Jim Holloway produced interior illustrations for many ''Dungeons & Dragons'' books and ''Dragon'' magazine starting in 1981, as well as cover art for ''The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror'' and ''Dungeonland'' (1983), and ''Mad Monkey vs. the Dragon Claw'' (1988), the '' Spelljammer: AD&D Adventures in Space'' boxed set (1989), and ''Ronin Challenge'' (1990). ''Idylls of the King'', published between 1859 and 1885, is a Literature cycle, cycle of twelve narrative poems by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892; Poet Laureate from 1850) which retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. The whole work recounts Arthur's attempt and failure to lift up mankind and create a perfect kingdom, from his coming to power to his death at the hands of the traitor Mordred. Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was an English poet. He was the Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign.
