Ida Marie Suhr
Ida Marie Suhr (1853–1938) was a wealthy Danish philanthropist and estate owner. She is remembered for her associations with the Skagen Painters, in particular Anna and Michael Ancher, whom she met during annual visits to Skagen and invited to stay with her at Petersgaard Manor in southern Zealand. In addition to the houses she built for those working on her estate, she funded an old people's home in nearby Langebæk and a convalescent home in Copenhagen. Biography Born on 5 October 1853 in Copenhagen, Ida Marie Suhr was the daughter of the prosperous merchant Ole Berendt Suhr (1813–1875) and Ida Marie Bech (1825–1897), the fourth of the six children in the family. Degn Brøndum
Christen Degn Brøndum (21 March 1856 – 18 April 1932) was the proprietor of Brøndums Hotel in Skagen, Denmark, which was closely associated with the Skagen Painters. Biography Born in Skagen, Brøndum was the son of Erik Andersen Brøndum and Ane Hedvig Møller and the brother of Anna Ancher. Erik Andersen Brøndum, Anna's and Degn's father ran the Brøndums Hotel before Degn Brøndum took over the hotel around 1880. Anna Ancher became one of the Skagen painters. Degn Brøndum was one of the founders of Skagens Museum in 1908. An avid art lover, Brøndum provided accommodation for many of the artists who came to spend the summer months in Skagen. If the artists were short of money, they were able to cover the cost of their accommodation at Brøndum's hotel by donating paintings to Degn Brøndum. These paintings were hung in the dining-room. Bodil Neergaard
Ellen Bodil Neergaard née Hartmann (10 February 1867 – 18 May 1959) was a Danish philanthropist and patron of the arts. She is remembered for her many philanthropic activities as well as for her life in Fuglsang Manor on the island of Lolland where, together with her husband Rolf Viggo de Neergaard, she hosted every Summer prominent artists and musicians. Nelly Erichsen
Nelly Erichsen (9 December 1862 – 15 November 1918) was an English illustrator and painter. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, she was born into a wealthy professional Danish family. After studies at the Royal Academy of Art in the 1880s, she pursued a successful career as an illustrator and writer, working with a number of publishing firms including J.M. Dent and Macmillan, and jointly publishing travel books with Janet Ross, a prominent member of the Anglo-Tuscan pre-War community. Skagen Church
Skagen Church (Danish: ''Skagen Kirke'') is a church located in the historic town centre of Skagen, Denmark. The Skagen area suffered from severe problems with sand drift up through the 18th century and in 1795 the sand covered old church had to be abandoned. It was a brick church of considerable size dedicated to Saint Lawrence which dated from the beginning of the 15th century and located 2 km south-west of the town centre. A new church was built in 1841 to the design of Christian Frederik Hansen. The church design was adapted and expanded in 1909-10 by Ulrik Plesner who also designed a number of other buildings in Skagen. Joakim Skovgaard
Joakim Frederik Skovgaard (18 November 1856 – 9 March 1933) was a Danish painter. He is remembered above all for the frescos which decorate Viborg Cathedral. Biography Born in Copenhagen, from an early age he was trained in drawing and painting by his father P.C. Skovgaard in the Danish Golden Age tradition and had close contacts with N.F.S. Grundtvig. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1871 to 1876 and attended Léon Bonnat's school in Paris in the winter of 1880-81 where he was influenced by the trend towards Realism. In the 1880s, he travelled to Italy and to Greece, where he was accompanied by Kristian Zahrtmann, developing an interest in Symbolism. In Rome, he was influenced by the Impressionist approach to painting taken by Theodor Philipsen. In 1891, Skovgaard was a co-founder of Den Frie Udstilling where he subsequently exhibited.
