Ida G. Ruben
Ida G. Ruben (born January 7, 1929) is an American politician who served in the Maryland House of Delegates from the 20th district from 1975 to 1987 and in the Maryland Senate from the 20th district from 1987 to 2007. Ruben was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1974, filling a seat that had been vacated by her husband, Leonard Ruben, who was appointed to a judgeship. She became a State Senator in 1987 and served in the chamber for 20 years, rising to the position of president pro tem before losing her seat in 2006 election. Maryland Senate
The Maryland Senate, sometimes referred to as the Maryland State Senate, is the upper house of the General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland. Composed of 47 senators elected from an equal number of constituent single-member districts, the Senate is responsible, along with the Maryland House of Delegates, for passage of laws in Maryland, and for confirming executive appointments made by the Governor of Maryland. It evolved from the upper house of the colonial assembly created in 1650 when Maryland was a proprietary colony controlled by Cecilius Calvert. It consisted of the Governor and members of the Governor's appointed council. Jamie Raskin
Jamin Ben Raskin (born December 13, 1962) is an American attorney and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Maryland's 8th congressional district since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the Maryland State Senate from 2007 to 2016. The district previously included portions of Montgomery County, a suburban county northwest of Washington, D.C., and extends through rural Frederick County to the Pennsylvania border. Following 2022 redistricting, it now encompasses only a portion of Montgomery County. The Maryland House of Delegates is the lower house of the legislature of the State of Maryland. It consists of 141 delegates elected from 47 districts. The House of Delegates Chamber is in the Maryland State House on State Circle in Annapolis, the state capital. Maryland's Legislative District 20 is one of 47 districts in the state for the Maryland General Assembly. It covers part of Montgomery County. Demographic characteristics As of the 2020 United States census, the district had a population of 130,131, of whom 100,770 (77.4%) were of voting age. The racial makeup of the district was 42,998 (33.0%) White, 42,758 (32.9%) African American, 1,302 (1.0%) Native American, 10,114 (7.8%) Asian, 41 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 18,901 (14.5%) from some other race, and 14,008 (10.8%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 31,560 (24.3%) of the population. Leonard Ruben
L. Leonard Ruben (1925 – March 21, 2007) was a Montgomery County, Maryland judge from 1974 until his death. He was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1970, vacating the seat upon appointment to the Montgomery County's District Court, where he served ten years. He served another 10 years on the Circuit Court until 1995 when he hit the state's mandatory retirement age of 70. At that point he continued as a part-time judge. Peter Franchot
Peter Van Rensselaer Franchot (born November 25, 1947) is an American politician who is the 33rd Comptroller of Maryland. A member of the Democratic Party, Franchot served for 20 years in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Takoma Park and Silver Spring. He was elected comptroller in 2006, and has subsequently been re-elected three times. Franchot unsuccessfully ran for governor of Maryland in 2022, placing third in the Democratic primary behind Tom Perez and Wes Moore. Early life and education Franchot was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He attended Amherst College, but later left to join the presidential campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy.
