Ida Burkes
Ida Mary Dorsey (née Callahan; March 7, 1866 – June 18, 1918), also known as Ida Burkes and Ida Pillsbury, was an American madam who operated five successive houses of prostitution in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dorsey's life came into focus when Penny Petersen published ''Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront'' in 2013. Part African-American, Dorsey catered only to whites and was among the city's most prominent and successful madams. The brothel she built at 212 Eleventh Avenue South is the only one still standing from Minneapolis' three red-light districts ( 1870s – 1910). Dorsey is also remembered for her long-term friendship with Carleton Pillsbury, scion of the Pillsbury family. Eitel Hospital
Eitel Hospital (later renamed "Doctors Memorial Hospital") is a former hospital building in Minneapolis, Minnesota, located across from Loring Park. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is a brick building primarily in the Classical Revival style, made plainer when its original cornice was removed. History The hospital was founded by George G. Eitel in 1912 and served wealthy citizens of Minneapolis. The ''Minneapolis Journal'' first announced plans in 1906, and published drawings for a four-story hospital in 1907. Fund raising caused construction delays. In January 1911, the paper published renderings by Long, Lamoreaux & Long for a five-story hospital, and in June for eight stories. It was finally built as five stories on a basement. Nina Clifford
Nina Clifford (August 3, 1851 – July 14, 1929) was a Canadian-born madam who ran the most popular brothel in Saint Paul, Minnesota, from 1889 to 1929. Early life Clifford was born Johanna Crow (also known as "Hannah") on August 3, 1851, in Chatham, Canada West to Irish or German immigrant parents. Her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, while she was a child. Later, still in Detroit, she married a man named Conrad Steinbrecher. Saint Paul Widowed in 1886 at the age of 35, Clifford moved to St. Paul. In 1887 she brought two building lots on Washington Street along the Mississippi River, opposite the city morgue and police station, and had two red brick buildings built. Charles Alfred Pillsbury (December 3, 1842 – September 17, 1899) was an American businessman, flour industrialist, and politician. He was a co-founder of the Pillsbury Company. Education and early business career Pillsbury was born December 3, 1842 in Warner, New Hampshire, first of three children born to George Alfred Pillsbury and Margaret Sprague Carleton. His sister Mary A. died in infancy. His brother Frederick Carleton Pillsbury was born in 1852. Pillsbury had a modest upbringing.
