ICTUS is a Belgian orchestra, founded by in 1994, specialising in contemporary classical music. It is based in Brussels where it is involved in frequent collaborations with the contemporary dance choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The orchestra specialises in music written since 1950 with an emphasis on contemporary compositions. Drumming (Reich)
''Drumming'' is a piece by minimalist composer Steve Reich, dating from 1970–1971. Reich began composition of the work after a short visit to Ghana and observing music and musical ensembles there, especially under the Anlo Ewe master drummer Gideon Alorwoyie. His visit was cut short after contracting malaria. Classical music critic K. Robert Schwarz describes the work as "minimalism's first masterpiece". Compositional style Phasing The piece employs Reich's trademark technique of phasing. Phasing is achieved when two players, or one player and a recording, are playing a single repeated pattern in unison, usually on the same kind of instrument. One player changes tempo slightly, while the other remains constant, and eventually the two players are one or several beats out of sync with each other. Contemporary history, in English-language historiography, is a subset of modern history that describes the historical period from approximately 1945 to the present. Contemporary history is either a subset of the late modern period, or it is one of the three major subsets of modern history, alongside the early modern period and the late modern period. Benoît Mernier (born 16 December 1964) is a Belgian classical organist and composer. Biography Born in Bastogne, he was a student of Philippe Boesmans. He is also professor of organ and improvisation at the Higher Institute of Music and Pedagogy in Namur. His first opera ''Frühlings Erwachen'' after Frank Wedekind was premiered in 2007 at La Monnaie of Brussels then resumed in September 2008 at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg. His works are the subject of a series of discographic productions including a CD/DVD box set of ''Frühings erwachen'' (), which was awarded a Diapason d'or in 2009. Terrence Mitchell "Terry" Riley (born June 24, 1935) is an American composer and performing musician best known as a pioneer of the minimalist school of composition. Steve Reich
Stephen Michael Reich ( ; born October 3, 1936) is an American composer known for his contribution to the development of minimal music in the mid to late 1960s. Reich's work is marked by its use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm, and canons. Reich describes this concept in his essay, "Music as a Gradual Process", by stating, "I am interested in perceptible processes. I want to be able to hear the process happening throughout the sounding music."
