Icklesham
Icklesham is a village and civil parish in the Rother district of East Sussex, England. The village is located about six miles (10 km) east of Hastings, on the main A259 Hastings to Rye road. The surrounding countryside is a made up of fields, hills, woods, orchards and vineyards. The civil parish is large, and includes Icklesham itself, Winchelsea, Winchelsea Beach and Rye Harbour. History Icklesham's historic roots can be traced back to 772, when it appeared as ''Icoleshamme'' in a land charter signed by Offa, King of Mercia. Strategically located on the River Brede, it was a prime target in the Norman invasion of 1066 (some 700 years later, evacuation plans were prepared in case of an invasion by Napoleon). The 12th Century church of All Saints & St. Nicholas was restored by architect Samuel Sanders Teulon in the late 1840s. Hogg Hill Mill, Icklesham
Hogg Hill Mill is a post mill at Icklesham in East Sussex, England. History Hogg Hill Mill was built in Pett in 1781 and moved to Icklesham in 1790. It was working by wind until 1920, when it was stopped, owing to a weak weatherbeam. The mill was also used as a filming location for the 1951 British crime drama film '' The Quiet Woman'', directed by John Gilling. Today, the mill houses the recording studios of Sir Paul McCartney. Description Hogg Hill Mill is a post mill on a two-storey roundhouse. It has four spring sails carried on a cast iron windshaft and is winded by a roof-mounted fantail. Winchelsea
Winchelsea () is a small town in the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex, England, located between the High Weald and the Romney Marsh, approximately south west of Rye and north east of Hastings. The current town, which was founded in 1288, replaced an earlier town of the same name, known as Old Winchelsea, that was lost to coastal erosion in the late medieval period. Winchelsea is part of the civil parish of Icklesham. The mayor of Winchelsea is chosen each year from amongst the members of the corporation, who are known as freemen, rather than being elected by public vote. New freemen are themselves chosen by existing members of the corporation. Thus, in its current form, the corporation is effectively a relic of Winchelsea's days as a 'rotten borough' (when Winchelsea elected two MPs but the number of voters was restricted to about a dozen, sometimes fewer). Richard Kenward
Richard Kenward (23 May 1875 – 24 December 1957) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1899 and for Sussex in 1902. Kenward was born at Icklesham, Sussex the son of Trayton Kenward and his wife Emily Turtle. His father was a farmer of over living at The Manor House Icklesham. Kenward made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1899 season in a match against Essex in June when he made 56 in his second innings to help Derbyshire to victory. Kenward generally made a reasonable score when he played more than one innings and his average for the team was 17.52. However he stopped playing for Derbyshire at the end of the season. In 1902 Kenward played four games for Sussex but made little impression as 21 of his 23 runs came in one innings. He also played a match for a London County team captained by W. G. Charles Kenward
Charles Kenward (7 September 1877 – 14 November 1948) was an English first-class cricketer. Kenward was born at Icklesham Manor House in the village of Icklesham, Sussex to Trayton Kenward and his wife Emily Turtle. His father was a farmer of over . Kenward made a single appearance in first-class cricket for the Gentlemen of England against Oxford University at Oxford in 1905. Batting twice during the match, Kenward was dismissed for 43 runs by Robin Udal in the Gentlemen of England first-innings, while in their second-innings he was dismissed by Francis Henley for 4 runs. He was later a Land Tax Commissioner for the county of Sussex in 1938. He died at Rye, Sussex in November 1948. Rye Harbour
Rye Harbour is a village located on the East Sussex coast in southeast England, near the estuary of the River Rother: it is part of the civil parish of Icklesham and the Rother district. Rye Harbour is located some two miles (3.2 km) downstream of the town of Rye. The River Rother from Rye seawards, and including the village of Rye Harbour, is under the control of the Environment Agency. At the village itself there are yacht moorings; a small fishing fleet (coded RX: Rye SusseX); some commercial shipping; and a long-established lifeboat station. There is also a holiday village called Rye Harbour Holiday Park alongside the village itself. An industrial estate straddles the road to Rye Harbour from Rye. River Brede
The River Brede is an English river in East Sussex. It flows into the Rock Channel (tidal section of the River Tillingham) and then onto the River Rother at Rye, Sussex. It takes its name from the village of Brede, which lies between Hastings and Tenterden. Etymology The river takes its name from the village of Brede. The village is on the north bank of the river, and its name in Old English means ''breadth'', as it overlooks the wide river valley. Prior to the fifteenth century, the river was known as the ''Ee'' or ''Ree'', which simply means 'river' in Old English. Winchelsea Beach is a seaside village in the parish of Icklesham in the Rother district of East Sussex, England. The village is located about ten miles (15 km) east of Hastings, and about 1.5 miles (2 km) south east of Winchelsea. The beach itself faces Rye Bay, the estuary of the River Rother. At high tide it is composed of shingle, which is normal on this stretch of coastline; whilst at low tide an expanse of mud and sand is revealed. Rye Harbour SSSI
Rye Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest is a nature reserve located on the western side of the mouth of the River Rother at Rye Harbour, about 1 mile downstream from Rye East Sussex. It forms part of a wide network of SSSI's on the Kent-Sussex border that include the Romney & Walland Marsh, the Dungeness Peninsular, the lower Rother Valley and the Pett Levels. It is a complicated site of both biological and geological interest. Varied habitats of shingle, saltmarsh and intertidal muds host a wide variety of flora and fauna. It forms the second largest area of shingle habitat in southern England, only surpassed in area by Dungeness. A much larger area is designated as the Rye Harbour Local Nature Reserve. The Natural England citation for the site covers an area of 761 hectares, but the details page and map cover a small area of 5.6 hectares north of the nature reserve.
