''Ichthyokentema'' ("fish-goad") is an extinct genus of stem-teleost fish that lived during the Late Jurassic. It contains one species, ''I. purbeckensis'', which is known from the Purbeck Group of Dorset, England. ''I. purbeckensis'' was originally described as a species of ''Pholidophorus'' by William Davies (palaeontologist), William Davies in 1887, but was moved to its own genus by Arthur Smith Woodward in 1941. Pholidophorus
''Pholidophorus'' (from el, φολῐ́ς , 'horny scale' and el, φέρω , 'to bear') is an extinct genus of stem-teleost fish. Numerous species were assigned to this genus in the past, but only the type species ''Pholidophorus latiusculus'', from the Late Triassic of Europe, is considered to be a valid member of the genus today. Taxonomy The genus ''Pholidophorus'' for a long time served as a wastebasket taxon containing various unrelated species of basal stem-teleosts. Over the years, many of these have been moved to separate genera. The Late Jurassic nominal species ''"Pholidophorus" purbeckensis'' was renamed '' Ichthyokentema'' by Arthur Woodward in 1941. Likewise, the Early Jurassic form ''"Pholidophorus" bechei'' was renamed '' Dorsetichthys'' and moved to its own family, Dorsetichthyidae, by Arratia (2013). The Late Jurassic is the third epoch of the Jurassic Period, and it spans the geologic time from 163.5 ± 1.0 to 145.0 ± 0.8 million years ago (Ma), which is preserved in Upper Jurassic strata.Owen 1987. Purbeck Group
The Purbeck Group is an Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous lithostratigraphic group (a sequence of rock strata) in south-east England. The name is derived from the district known as the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset where the strata are exposed in the cliffs west of Swanage. The Purbeck Group is famous for its fossils of reptiles and early mammals. This sequence of rocks has gone by various names in the past including amongst others the Purbeck Beds, Purbeck Formation, Purbeck Limestone Formation and Purbeck Stone. Rocks of this age have in the past been called the Purbeckian stage by European geologists. The Purbeckian corresponds with the Tithonian to Berriasian stages of the internationally used geologic timescale. William Davies (palaeontologist)
William Davies, (13 July 1814 – 13 February 1891) was a British palaeontologist. Life Davies was born on 13 July 1814 at Holywell, Flintshire. His father was Thomas Davies and his mother was Elizabeth Turner. He studied botany and in 1843 began work at the Geology Department of the British Museum, first also in the field of mineralogy, later specialising in vertebrate palaeontology. On 1 April 1846 he joint the Survey as a Fossil Collector. Davies assisted Sir Antonio Brady in his work on collecting Pleistocene mammal fossils, and Brady acknowledged his debt to Davies in ''Catalogue of Pleistocene Mammalia from Ilford, Essex'' (1874). Excavating a large mammoth skull, Davies used the innovation of surrounding the fossil, in the field, with plaster of Paris, reinforced by iron bars. Arthur Smith Woodward
Sir Arthur Smith Woodward, FRS (23 May 1864 – 2 September 1944) was an English palaeontologist, known as a world expert in fossil fish. He also described the Piltdown Man fossils, which were later determined to be fraudulent. He is not related to Henry Woodward, whom he replaced as curator of the Geology Department of the British Museum of Natural History. Biography Woodward was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England and was educated there and at Owens College, Manchester. He joined the staff of the Department of Geology at the Natural History Museum in 1882. He became assistant Keeper of Geology in 1892, and Keeper in 1901. He was appointed Secretary of the Palaeontographical Society and in 1904, was appointed President of the Geological Society.
