Icelandic Mathematical Society
The Icelandic Mathematical Society ( is, Íslenzka stærðfræðafélagið) is the umbrella organization for mathematicians in Iceland. In 2017, the Society had nearly 300 members. It is based in Reykjavík and hosts several conferences related to mathematics. History Formation The Society was founded in Reykjavík on 31 October 1947 at the home of, and in honour of, Ólafur Daníelsson, whose 70th birthday it was. Laugarvatn
Laugarvatn () is the name of a lake and a small town in the south of Iceland. The lake is smaller than the neighbouring Apavatn. Tourism Laugarvatn lies within the Golden Circle, a popular tourist route, and acts as a staging post. The town has a population of about 200, and lies predominantly along the west side of the lake. The lake contains geothermal springs under its surface, making it a popular swimming spot with some warm patches along the shoreline year-round. Education Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni (ML), a boarding gymnasium with approximately 200 students, is located in the town. Paul Erdős ( hu, Erdős Pál ; 26 March 1913 – 20 September 1996) was a Hungarian mathematician. He was one of the most prolific mathematicians and producers of mathematical conjectures of the 20th century. pursued and proposed problems in discrete mathematics, graph theory, number theory, mathematical analysis, approximation theory, set theory, and probability theory. André Weil (; ; 6 May 1906 – 6 August 1998) was a French mathematician, known for his foundational work in number theory and algebraic geometry. He was a founding member and the ''de facto'' early leader of the mathematical Bourbaki group. The philosopher Simone Weil was his sister. The writer Sylvie Weil is his daughter. Sigurður Helgason (mathematician)
Sigurdur Helgason (born 30 September 1927; Icelandic: ''Sigurður'') is an Icelandic mathematician whose research has been devoted to the geometry and analysis on symmetric spaces. In particular, he has used new integral geometric methods to establish fundamental existence theorems for differential equations on symmetric spaces as well as some new results on the representations of their isometry groups. He also introduced a Fourier transform on these spaces and proved the principal theorems for this transform, the inversion formula, the Plancherel theorem and the analog of the Paley–Wiener theorem. He was born in Akureyri, Iceland. In 1954, he earned a PhD from Princeton University under Salomon Bochner. Bjarni Jónsson
Bjarni Jónsson (February 15, 1920 – September 30, 2016) was an Icelandic mathematician and logician working in universal algebra, lattice theory, model theory and set theory. He was emeritus distinguished professor of mathematics at Vanderbilt University and the honorary editor in chief of ''Algebra Universalis''.
