The Team of the 20th Century in Icelandic basketball was chosen in 2001. The selection of the men's team was made by a 50-person panel while a 25-person panel selected the women's team. Pétur Guðmundsson (basketball)
Pétur Karl Guðmundsson (born 30 October 1958) is an Icelandic former professional basketball player and coach from Reykjavík. Standing 2.18 m (7'2"), weighing 118 kg (260 lb) and playing the center (basketball), center position, Pétur was the first Icelander and one of the first European players ever to play in National Basketball Association (NBA). He was also a member of the Iceland men's national basketball team, Icelandic national basketball team from 1978 to 1992 but missed several years due to FIBA rules banning professional players from playing for national teams. Guðbjörg Norðfjörð Elíasdóttir (born 8 April 1972) is an Icelandic former basketball player and the current chairman of the Icelandic Basketball Federation. As a player, she was named the Icelandic Women's Basketball Player of the Year in 1999 and was a seven-time selection to the Úrvalsdeild kvenna Domestic All-First Team. Guðbjörg won the Icelandic championship three times and the Icelandic Cup four times. She was a member of the Icelandic national basketball team from 1990 to 2002. Leifur Sigfinnur Garðarsson (born 23 February 1968) is an Icelandic former basketball referee, multi-sport athlete and football manager. Basketball Referee career Leifur started refereeing in 1987. During the 1991 Úrvalsdeild karla playoffs, Leifur was hit by a fan and threatened violence following a match between bitter rivals Njarðvík and Keflavík. He retired from refereeing in 2004 to focus on furthering his football managing career but returned in 2013. He was a FIBA referee from 1993 to 2004 and again from 2014 to 2018 when he retired due to age restrictions for international referees. Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson is an Icelandic former basketball coach and former basketball player. As a coach, he has won three Icelandic men's championships and has guided his team to the Icelandic national finals a record seven times. Friðrik was the general manager of the Icelandic Basketball Association from 2006 to 2014 and coached the Icelandic men's national basketball team from 1999 to 2003. Hafdís Elín Helgadóttir (born 23 January 1965) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She spent a record 25 seasons in the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, scoring 3,180 points in 362 games. She retired as the Úrvalsdeild all-time leader list in career games played but has since been surpassed by Birna Valgarðsdóttir. As a member of ÍS, she won the national championship in 1991 and the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 1991 and 2003. In 2001 she was named to the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century. Erla Þorsteinsdóttir (born 8 March 1978) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She was a key player on the Keflavík team that won six Icelandic championships and seven Icelandic basketball cups during her stay there. Alda Leif Jónsdóttir (born 18 April 1979) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She has won the Icelandic championship four times and the Dutch championship once. Alda was a seven-time selection for the Úrvalsdeild Domestic All-First Team and was named the Úrvalsdeild Domestic Player of the Year in 2002.
