Ice Skating Marathon
Ice skating marathons are long distance speed skating races which may be held on natural ice on canals, and bodies of water such as lakes and rivers. Marathon is a discipline of speed skating, which is founded in The Netherlands. The races concern speed skating by at least five skaters who start all together on an ice rink with a minimum length of 333.33 meters or on a track: * Minimum distance longer than 6.4 kilometers and up to 200 kilometers for skaters who have reached the age of 17 prior to the skating season on July 1. * Minimum distance longer than 4 kilometers and up to 20 kilometers for skaters who have reached the age of or the age of 13, but have not yet reached the age of 17 before July 1 preceding the skating season. * Minimum distance of 2 kilometers and up to 10 kilometers for skaters who have not yet reached the age of 13 before July 1 preceding the skating season. Elfstedentocht
The ''Elfstedentocht'' (; West Frisian: ''Alvestêdetocht'' , English: ''Eleven cities tour'') is a long-distance tour skating event on natural ice, almost long, which is held both as a speed skating competition (with 300 contestants) and a leisure tour (with 16,000 skaters). The ''Elfstedentocht'' is the biggest ice-skating tour in the world. The tour is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, leading past all eleven historical cities of the province. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least thick; sometimes on consecutive years, other times with gaps that may exceed 20 years. When the ice is suitable, the tour is announced and starts within 48 hours. The Elfstedentocht has been declared to be in danger of "extinction" due to climate change. Christine Diane Witty (born June 23, 1975) is an American speed skater and racing cyclist and participated in the Olympic Games in both sports. She won medals at both 1000 and 1500 meters in the 1998 Winter Olympics. In 2002, she won the Olympic gold medal at the 1000 meters in Salt Lake City, setting a world record in the process. In 1996 she became World Champion Sprint, in 1997 and 1998 she became second and in 2000 she became third. In 1998 she won the gold medal at the World Single Distance Championships at the 1000 m, in 1996 the silver and in 2000 the bronze medal at the same distance. Bart Swings (born 12 February 1991) is a Belgian long track speed skater and inline speed skater. He is the 2022 Olympic champion on the speed skating mass start. Swings won Belgium's first gold medal in 74 years and is the first Belgian athlete ever to have won two medals in the Winter Olympics. Cédric Michaud (born 26 February 1976, in Machecoul) is a French marathon speed skater. He was the first non-Dutchman after Oleg Bozhev to win the Essent Cup in 2002–03, while he won the cup another time in 2005–06. In that year he also won the Dick van Gangelen Trophy and the Six Days of the Greenery. He also won the latter in 2001–02 and 2002–03. As of today Michaud has won 35 marathons on artificial speed skating tracks, including two during the 2006 Six Days of the Greenery. Tristan Loy (born 11 May 1973) is a French long distance and marathon speedskater, long track speedskater, and inline speedskater. Loy won the 120 kilometres race of the 2006 Finland Ice Marathon in Kuopio. During the 2006 Six Days of the Greenery he did not win a race, nor the final classification, but he was named to be the most exciting skater of the tournament. As a result, he was awarded 18 points for the 2007 Dick van Gangelen Trophy, most of all participating skaters. Loy also takes part in international long track speed skating races, usually over the long distances 5,000 and 10,000 metres. Sjoerd Huisman (19 June 1986 – 30 December 2013) was a Dutch speed skater who specialised in marathon speed skating. Career Huisman made his debut in marathon speed skating in 2005 to become one of the best sprinters in the peloton. His biggest success was winning the Dutch championship on natural ice in 2009 at the Oostvaardersplassen. A year later Huisman won the Essent Cup and the Dutch Open at the Austrian Weissensee. Huisman was also successful in inline skating. In 2010 he won the Dutch marathon championship. In May 2011, Huisman was involved in a car accident after he blacked-out behind the wheel.
