Zhao Te-yin (; born 18 December 1982), also known as Midi Z, is a Myanmar-born Taiwanese film director. His 2014 film ''Ice Poison'' was selected as the Taiwanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. On November 7, 2016, his work ''The Road to Mandalay'' (2016) was screened in his home country for the first time. Life and career Chao was born in Lashio, Shan State, Myanmar. Both his parents are of Chinese descent, and his ancestral home is Nanjing. The son of a cook and a doctor, Chao was the youngest of five children and grew up poor. He won a scholarship and moved to Taiwan when he was 16, where he went to high school. Chao received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in design at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. In 2011, he renounced his Burmese citizenship, and became a naturalised citizen of Taiwan. He was named Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards in 2016. Wu Ke-Xi (born 6 February 1983) is a Taiwanese actress. She has had starring roles in most of Midi Z's films. This is a list of submissions to the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of a number of countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. It is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length film produced outside the United States with primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process, reviewing all films submitted. For the 87th Academy Awards, held on 22 February 2015, a submitted motion picture must be released theatrically in its respective country between 1 October 2013 and 30 September 2014. The Republic of China (Taiwan) has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1957, and regularly since 1980. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. For the purposes of Oscar submissions, AMPAS recognizes Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong as separate entities, and each one regularly submits a film to the competition.
