Ian Sharp (public Servant)
Ian Gordon Sharp (April 23, 1913 – July 26, 1996) was a former senior Australian public servant, best known for his time as Secretary heading the Department of Labour and subsequently the Department of Labor and Immigration in the early 1970s. Life and career Dr Ian Sharp was born in 1913. He attended the University of Western Australia, studying Law. Graduating with first class honours, he was admitted to the London School of Economics. His Ph.D thesis "Industrial Conciliation and Arbritration in Great Britain" was published by Allen and Unwin in 1950. In 1972, Dr Sharp was appointed Secretary of the new Department of Labour, Contrary to the practice of most Whitlam Ministers, who inherited departmental heads from their Menzies Government colleagues, Dr Sharp was hand-chosen for the role by the Minister for Labour Clyde Cameron. Department Of Labour (Australia)
The Department of Labour was an Australian government department that existed between December 1972 and June 1974. This department was created and operated under the Whitlam government, with Clyde Cameron appointed as minister. The Department of Labour was a catalyst for the increase in the national minimum wage and pushed for the equalising of pay rates between men and women. During this period, Cameron pushed for paid maternity and annual leave. They also worked to reduce the number of industrial disputes for the Conciliation and Arbitration Commission. Clyde Cameron
Clyde Robert Cameron, (11 February 191314 March 2008), was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and served in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1980, representing the Division of Hindmarsh. He was a leading figure in the Australian labour movement and held ministerial office in the Whitlam Government as Minister for Labour (1972–1974), Labor and Immigration (1974–1975), and Science and Consumer Affairs (1975). Early life Cameron was born in Murray Bridge, South Australia, the son of a shearer of Scottish descent. He was educated at Gawler but left school at 14 to work as a shearer. During the very worst years of the Great Depression, he was unemployed, and the experience of joblessness was one that he never forgot or forgave. Peter Wilenski
Peter Stephen Wilenski, (10 May 1939 – 3 November 1994) was a senior Australian public servant and ambassador. He was a champion of women's rights and equal opportunity. Early life Peter Wilenski was born in Łódź, Poland on 10 May 1939. He came to Australia in 1943 as a Jewish refugee, due to World War II conflict and persecution of Jewish people in his home country. His family spent time in a Soviet internment camp before coming to Australia. For high school education, he attended Sydney Boys High School. He later studied at the University of Sydney where he met his first wife, Gail Radford, when both were student politicians. Hal Cook
Sir Philip Halford "Hal" Cook (10 October 19124 January 1990) was a senior Australian public servant, best known for his time heading the Department of Labour and National Service between 1968 and 1972. Life and career Hal Cook was born on 10 October 1912 in Benalla, Victoria to parents Richard Osborne Cook and Elinor Violet May, née Cook. He was appointed Secretary of the Department of Labour and National Service in January 1968, having worked in the Department since 1946. When the Whitlam government was elected in 1972, Cook was replaced by the incoming Minister for Labour, Clyde Cameron, who wished to work with instead with Ian Sharp for what media described as "personal" reasons. Cameron later claimed Cook had "put too much time and enthusiasm into preparing evasive answers" to questions in Parliament. Cook died on 4 January 1990 at Box Hill and was cremated. George Warwick Smith
George Henry Warwick Smith (3 October 1916 – 27 December 1999) was a senior Australian public servant. Early life Warwick Smith was born in Charters Towers, Queensland on 3 November 1916. He attended high school at Brisbane Grammar School, but left early at the age of 15. He went on to matriculate and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. Career Warwick Smith moved from a job at the Queensland Education Department to the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of Commerce. He soon left the public service to join the Army, serving during the Second World War between 1941 and 1945.
