Ian Occleshaw
Ian Eric "Occ" Occleshaw (1928-2015) was a professional tennis player and coach. He was a member of the Linton Cup team in 1947, managed Linton Cup and Wilson Cup teams on several occasions, coached Peter McNamara and Alan Stone and is one of the founders of Tennis Coaches Australia Victoria (TCAV). He worked on the Tennis Australia Development Board, was president, secretary and member of the board of TCAV. Occleshaw died on 29 March 2015. Career Playing Coaching Occleshaw commenced coaching in 1951. He was the head coach at Glen Iris (30 years), school coach at St Catherienes (30 years) and Corowa (35 years) owned four courts in West Coburg, was the resident pro, with Don Tregonning, at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club (20 years) and coached squads in the United States. Peter McNamara
Peter McNamara (5 July 1955 – 20 July 2019) was an Australian tennis player and coach. McNamara won five singles titles and nineteen doubles titles in his career. A right-hander, McNamara reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on 14 March 1983 when he became world No. 7. McNamara and fellow Australian Paul McNamee won the 1980 and 1982 men's doubles championship at Wimbledon and the Australian Open doubles in 1979. McNamara's highest rank in doubles was No. 3. After retiring as a player, McNamara coached professionals including Mark Philippoussis, Grigor Dimitrov, Matthew Ebden and Wang Qiang. Jack Crawford (tennis)
John Herbert Crawford, (22 March 1908 – 10 September 1991) was an Australian tennis player during the 1930s. He was the World No. 1 amateur for 1933, during which year he won the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon, and was runner-up at the U.S. Open in five sets, thus missing the Grand Slam by one set that year. He also won the Australian Open in 1931, 1932, and 1935. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1979. Early life Crawford was born on 22 March 1908 in Urangeline, near Albury, New South Wales, the second youngest child of Jack Sr. and Lottie Crawford. He had no tennis training as a child and practised mainly by hitting against the house and school and playing his older brother. Frank Sedgman
Francis "Frank" Arthur Sedgman (born 29 October 1927) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Over the course of a three-decade career, Sedgman won five Grand Slam singles tournaments as an amateur as well as 22 Grand Slam doubles tournaments. He is one of only five tennis players all-time to win multiple career Grand Slams in two disciplines, alongside Margaret Court, Roy Emerson, Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams. In 1951, he and Ken McGregor won the Grand Slam in men's doubles. Sedgman turned professional in 1953, and won the Wembley World Professional Indoor singles title in 1953 and 1958. Don Tregonning
Donald Philip Tregonning (26 November 1928 – 14 September 2022) was an Australian professional tennis player and coach. Tregonning, a student of Melbourne coach Mick Sweetnam, was a member of the international amateur and professional tennis communities, reaching the mixed doubles semi finals of the 1953 Australian Open, playing twice in the quarter-finals of doubles competitions at the Australian Open (1949, 1953) and reaching the quarter-finals of the Wembley Professional Championships in 1953. Tregonning played in a famous 1953 Australian Championships Round 1 match in which the umpire left the grounds to "go to (his) tea". Tregonning is the former head-coach at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club (then the site of the Australian Open), Danish national coach, and for 30 years he coached the Japanese national team and helped them to a 3–2 upset over Australia in the "Australian Davis Cup". Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club
Kooyong Stadium, at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, is an Australian tennis venue, located in the Melbourne suburb of Kooyong. The stadium, was built in 1927, and has undergone several renovations. It has a seating capacity of slightly more than 5,000. At its peak the stadium was capable of hosting up to 15,000 patrons. History Kooyong was the venue for the Australian Open, whenever that tournament was held in Melbourne, becoming the permanent venue from 1972 to 1987. It was the last Australian Open venue to play on grass courts. The tournament was moved to the hard courts of Melbourne Park in 1988. Now a hard-court surface, it remains the venue for the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament.
