Ian Major
Ian James Major (19 September 1943 – 28 January 2009) was an Australian sports broadcaster. Chiefly known for commentary in Australian rules football, Major broadcast VFL/AFL, Victorian Football League matches with Melbourne radio station 3XY from 1966 to 1969. He formed an association with 3KZ for 21 years (1970–1991),http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/142310 ''VFL Record'', 4 April 1970 p. 16 commentating on VFL/AFL matches. His partner in the commentary box was Richmond Football Club, Richmond's Jack Dyer, Jack "Captain Blood" Dyer, leading to the reference of the duo as "The Captain and the Major". They were named Australasia's top sporting commentators and given a Pater award. In sports broadcasting, a sports commentator (also known as sports announcer or sportscaster) provides a real-time commentary of a game or event, usually during a live broadcast, traditionally delivered in the historical present tense. Radio was the first medium for sports broadcasts, and radio commentators must describe all aspects of the action to listeners who cannot see it for themselves. In the case of televised sports coverage, commentators are usually presented as a voiceover, with images of the contest shown on viewers' screens and sounds of the action and spectators heard in the background. 3AW is a talkback radio station based in Melbourne. It broadcasts on 693 kHz AM. It began transmission on 22 February 1932 as Melbourne's fifth commercial radio station. The station is owned and operated by Nine Entertainment Co. History 3AW was established when a company formed by Allans, JC Williamson's and David Syme (then publishers of ''The Age'' newspaper) was granted a radio broadcasting licence, with the first broadcast on 22 February 1932. The A in 3AW comes from the names of "Allans" and "The "Age"; and the W is from "J. C. Scott Ian Major (born 4 July 1975) is an Australian actor and TV and film director, best known for his roles as Peter Rivers in the 1994 television teen drama series ''Heartbreak High'' and Lucas Fitzgerald in soap opera ''Neighbours''.
