Ian Gray (Australian Magistrate)
Ian L. Gray AM (born 1950) is a retired Victorian lawyer, and former judge, chief magistrate and State Coroner at the Coroners Court of Victoria. Education Gray completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws at Monash University, graduating in 1973. Career He initially practised as a private solicitor, before beginning work as a community lawyer in a Community Legal Service and at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service. In 1982, he was admitted to the Victorian Bar and practiced as a barrister, specialising in criminal law. In 1987, Gray was appointed as the Principal Legal Advisor for the Northern Land Council in Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin. In 1990, Gray was appointed a magistrate in the Northern Territory. By 1992, he was Chief Magistrate of the Northern Territory. Coroners Court Of Victoria
The name of "Coroners Court" is the generic name given to proceedings in which a Coroner holds an inquest in Victoria. Jurisdiction Coroners have jurisdiction over the remains of a person and the power to make findings in respect of the cause of death of a person. When a serious criminal offence has been disclosed during the course of an inquest, the Coroner may adjourn the proceedings until the criminal proceedings are concluded. Coroners may also hold inquests concerning the cause of any fire in Victoria, unlike their English counterparts. The County Court of Victoria is the intermediate court in the Australian state of Victoria. It is equivalent to district courts in the other states. The County Court is the principal trial court in the state, having a broad criminal and civil jurisdiction. The court hears indictable offences (with the exception of murder, manslaughter, and treason), and has unlimited civil jurisdiction, though it generally only hears cases where the statement of claim exceeds the Magistrates' Court limit of $100,000. The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government.
