Ian Fitzgerald
Ian Fitzgerald is a former Gaelic footballer from County Laois. He played his club football for Portlaoise and was also a member of the Laois senior team. He was part of the Laois Under 21 side that won the Leinster title in 1998 and was unfortunate to lose out on a Leinster Minor Football Championship medal in 1995 when it took three games to separate the O'Moore County and eventual All-Ireland Minor Football Championship winners Westmeath. Also in 1995 he earned a reputation as a penalty kick specialist during Laois's Leinster MFC run, famously netting a game-saving spot kick against Kildare in Navan. Fitzgerald made his senior debut against Kildare in 1996 and in 2003 was captain of the Laois team that won the Leinster Senior Football Championship title for the first time in 57 years. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Croke Park
Croke Park ( ga, Páirc an Chrócaigh, ) is a Gaelic games stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Named after Archbishop Thomas Croke, it is referred to as Croker by GAA fans and locals. It serves as both the principal national stadium of Ireland and headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The 2018 National Football League, known for sponsorship reasons as the Allianz National Football League, was the 87th staging of the National Football League (NFL), an annual Gaelic football tournament for Gaelic Athletic Association county teams. Thirty-one county teams from the island of Ireland, plus London, compete. Kilkenny do not participate. The first six rounds in all four divisions were scheduled to have been played before 24 March 2018, allowing the final round seven matches to be played on that date. John Sugrue
John Sugrue is a Gaelic games coach and manager. He has been in charge of the Laois county football team, the Kerry under-20 football team and is currently involved with the Laois county hurling team as a physio. Sugrue is from Renard, County Kerry. Laois appointed Sugrue football manager in 2017. As Laois football manager, Sugrue achieved consecutive promotions from Division Four to Division Two of the National Football League, brought the team to the 2018 Leinster Senior Football Championship final and to round four of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifiers in 2018 and 2019. He unexpectedly resigned in July 2019. Sugrue succeeded Jack O'Connor as manager of the Kerry under-20 football team in October 2019. Stephen Attride
Stephen Attride (born 1993) is a Gaelic footballer who has played for the Killeshin club and the Laois county team, serving as captain of his county for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. Attride was primarily interested in athletics from a young age, specifically middle-/long-distance running, at which he competed both nationally and internationally. However, while in his last year at school, he developed shin splints and this affected his future progress in athletics. He attended Dublin City University (DCU), where he played for the university football team. Age given as 24 in July 2018. Initially playing at wing-forward, Attride developed into a corner-back. The Laois Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Portarlington are the title holders (2022) defeating O'Dempsey's in the Final.
