Tone Lōc
Anthony Terrell Smith (born March 3, 1966), better known by his stage name Tone Lōc (), is an American rapper, actor, and producer. He is known for his raspy voice, his hit songs "Wild Thing" and " Funky Cold Medina", for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award, and for being featured in " We're All in the Same Gang", a collaborative single by the West Coast Rap All-Stars. Early life Anthony Terrell Smith was born March 3, 1966, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Margaret, who managed a retirement home, and James Smith. His father died in 1972, and Tony and his three older brothers were raised by his mother. He was educated at the Hollywood Professional School. As a teenager he performed with the Triple A rap group. Production was handled by Matt Dike, Michael Ross and The Dust Brothers. Delicious Vinyl is an American independent record label founded by Matt Dike and Michael Ross in 1987 and based in Los Angeles, California. History Michael Ross was a student at the University of California, Los Angeles when he met Matt Dike, a DJ from New York, in 1983. Dike was working at the Rhythm Lounge in Hollywood. They discovered that they were both members of Impact Record Pool, a service that provided new 12" records to club DJs, and that they shared an interest in soul, funk, and hip-hop. Soon Dike became the top DJ at Power Tools, a club in Los Angeles. In 1987, they founded Delicious Vinyl, an independent record label. Almost immediately the label was a success. Delicious Vinyl's first release was "Crackerjack" by Master Rhyme and "On Fire"/"Cheeba Cheeba" by Tone Loc, a Los Angeles gang member. Matt Dike (December 2, 1961 – January 16, 2018) was an American music executive, record producer, and DJ. He co-founded the hip-hop record label Delicious Vinyl in 1987. In the 1980s, Dike was artist Jean-Michel Basquiat's studio assistant and he worked on the Beastie Boys album ''Paul's Boutique'' (1989). He co-wrote and produced the song " Bust A Move" (1989) by Young MC, and co-produced " Smart Girls" (1991) by Brian Wilson. Life and career Matthew William Dike was born on December 2, 1961, in Suffern, New York to Tanya Kulikoff, a homemaker, and Constant Dike, a general contractor. "Funky Cold Medina" is a hip hop song written by Young MC, Matt Dike and Michael Ross, and first performed by American rapper, actor and producer Tone Lōc. It was the second single from Lōc's debut album, '' Lōc-ed After Dark'' (1989). The single was released on March 18, 1989, and rose to number three on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 the following month where it went platinum, selling over one million copies and becoming the second ever platinum-certified rap single (after ''Wild Thing'' from the same album being the first). It peaked on the UK Singles Chart at number 13 in May of that year. "All Through the Night" is a single by Tone Lōc and El DeBarge from Tone Lōc's second album, ''Cool Hand Lōc''. Following the huge success of ''Lōc-ed After Dark'' and two of its three singles (" Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina"), Tone Lōc released his sophomore album ''Cool Hand Lōc''. "All Through the Night", featuring R&B star El DeBarge, was released in advance of its album on October 29, 1991. "All Through the Night" found moderate success, reaching #80 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and #16 on the Rap Songs chart. However, compared to his previous singles, "All Through the Night" failed to live up to expectations. Despite its poor performance in radio and sales, the music video received heavy airplay on MTV and BET. It is his last single to chart.
