''Ana Horra'' or ''Ana Hurra'' ( ar, أنا حرة, en, italics=yes, I Am Free) is a 1959 Egyptian drama starring Lobna Abdel Aziz. ''Ana Horra'' is associated with the onset of a feminist context to Egyptian films in the 1960s. The film is also known as part of Salah Abu Seif's Empowerment of Women Trilogy. At its time, this film defied the conservative conventions of Egyptian society and the role of women within it. Plot summary The film is an account of a college girl's frustrations with the predominantly male patriarchal system in Egypt. Released in 1959, the film captures much of the feminist sentiments of the 1960s and its widespread fervor in Egypt. Salah Abu Seif
Salah Abu Seif ( ar, صلاح أبو سيف, ) (May 10, 1915 – June 23, 1996) was one of the most famous Egyptian film directors, and is considered to be the godfather of Neorealist cinema in Egyptian cinema. Many of the 41 films he directed are considered Egyptian classics with 11 films in the Top 100 Egyptian films list. His film '' The Beginning and the End'' (1960) was the first adaptation of a novel by Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. In 1977 he was a member of the jury at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival. Early life Abu-Seif was born in 1915, in Cairo's ancient quarter of Boolaq, to landowning parents from Upper Egypt. Ihsan Abdel Quddous ( arz, إحسان عبد القدوس ', ) (1 January 1919 – 12 January 1990) was an Egyptian writer, novelist, and journalist and editor in Egypt's ''Al Akhbar (Egypt), Al Akhbar'' and ''Al-Ahram'' newspapers.
