IRA Southern Command
IRA Southern Command was a command division in the Irish Republican Army (1922–1969) and Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), responsible for providing logistical support in the South (Irish Free State and later the Republic of Ireland) for IRA Northern Command operations in Northern Ireland. It was headquartered in Dublin. Irish Republican Army (1922–1969)
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) of 1922–1969 was a sub-group of the original pre-1922 Irish Republican Army (1919–1922), Irish Republican Army, characterised as the Anti-Treaty IRA for its opposition to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. It existed in various forms until 1969, when the IRA split again into the Provisional Irish Republican Army, Provisional IRA and Official Irish Republican Army, Official IRA. The original Irish Republican Army fought a guerrilla war against British rule in Ireland in the Irish War of Independence between 1919 and 1921. The Anglo-Irish Treaty signed on 6 December 1921 ended this war by granting most of the island a great degree of independence, but with six counties in the north staying within the United Kingdom as the new jurisdiction of Northern Ireland. Charlie McGlade
Charlie McGlade was a volunteer in the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and later member of the member of the Sinn Féin ''Ard Chomhairle'' (executive committee). Originally from Belfast, McGlade worked as a printer and later moved to Drimnagh in Dublin. McGlade joined the IRA in the late 1920s and by the late 1930s McGlade had become the Quartermaster of the IRAs' Belfast Brigade and was responsible for the creation of the IRAs Northern Command. He was arrested several times for IRA activities and (in 1936) received a two-year sentenced at hard labour. He was released in December 1938 and McGlade was appointed Officer commanding of the Belfast Brigade. McGlade was involved in the planning of the 1939-40 sabotage/ bombing attacks on England - the S-Plan. The Provisional Irish Republican Army began importing firearms and explosives in the early 1970s, with which it conducted an armed campaign against the British state in Northern Ireland.
