INS Kadmatt (P78)
''Arnala'' class was an Indian designation for the Petya III-class vessels of the Indian Navy. Although these vessels were classified as frigates in the Soviet Navy, they were classified by the Indian Navy as anti-submarine corvettes due to their role and smaller size. Vessels of the class were named for Indian islands. Operational history and were part of the task force for Operation Trident during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The hulls of this class were of relatively inferior quality, requiring the vessels to undergo major refit every 5 years. Anti-submarine
An anti-submarine weapon (ASW) is any one of a number of devices that are intended to act against a submarine and its crew, to destroy (sink) the vessel or reduce its capability as a weapon of war. In its simplest sense, an anti-submarine weapon is usually a projectile, missile or bomb that is optimized to destroy submarines. The AK-726 (abbr. of ) is a twin naval gun, which was developed in the Soviet Union and is still in service in various navies. History In 1954 the Soviet Union began development of a naval gun which could be used against both air and sea targets. The gun was developed by the development office (later Arsenal Design Bureau) under the direction of Pyotr Tyurin. The first tests began in 1958. The RBU-6000 Smerch-2 (Реактивно-Бомбовая Установка, ''Reaktivno-Bombovaja Ustanovka''; reaction engine-bomb installation & Смерч; waterspout) is a 213 mm caliber Soviet Union, Soviet anti-submarine weapon, anti-submarine multiple rocket launcher, rocket launcher. It is similar in principle to the Royal Navy Hedgehog (weapon), Hedgehog system used during the Second World War. The system entered service in 1960–1961 and is fitted to a wide range of Russian surface vessels. The Petya class was the NATO reporting name for a class of light frigates designed in the 1950s and built for the Soviet Navy in the 1960s. Operation Trident (1971)
Operation Trident was an offensive operation launched by the Indian Navy on Pakistan's port city of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Operation Trident saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region. The operation was conducted on the night of 4–5 December and inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani vessels and facilities. While India suffered no losses, Pakistan lost a minesweeper, a destroyer, a cargo vessel carrying ammunition, and fuel storage tanks in Karachi. Another destroyer was also badly damaged and eventually scrapped. India celebrates its Navy Day annually on 4 December to mark this operation.
