IJsselham
IJsselham is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, about 12 km west of Steenwijk, and 2 km southwest of Oldemarkt. IJsselham lent its name to a former municipality, created in the merger of Blankenham, Kuinre, and Oldemarkt. The municipality merged with Steenwijk in 2001. It was first mentioned in 1245 as Sileham. Oldemarkt
Oldemarkt (Stellingwerfs: ''Ooldemark'') is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, about 12 km west of Steenwijk. Oldemarkt was a separate municipality until 1973, when it became a part of IJsselham. History It was first mentioned in 1336 as Dodovene meaning "Bog of Dodo (person)". In 1448 it became "den Olden markt" meaning "the old market". In 1448, a chapel was built which was elevated to church in 1489. Oldemarkt was known for its butter market which moved to Wolvega in 1925. In 1840, it was home to 1,983 people. In 1973, it ceased to be an independent municipality, however the town hall of IJsselham remained in Oldemarkt. Kuinre
Kuinre (Low Saxon: ''De Kuunder'') is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It was a separate municipality until 1973, when it became a part of IJsselham, which in turn merged into the municipality of Steenwijkerland in 2001. Kuinre is a former harbour town with a rich history. Back in the days of the Zuiderzee, Kuinre's harbour was an important port of the Zuiderzee. After completion of the Noordoostpolder Kuinre became landlocked; companies, shops, and fishermen went out of business. History Kuinre is a village which developed at the mouth of the and the Linde. Steenwijk
Steenwijk (; Low German: ''Steenwiek'', ''Stienwiek'' English: ''Stenwick'') is a city in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Steenwijkerland. It is the largest town of the municipality. Steenwijk received city rights in 1327. In the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) it was conquered by the Spaniards in 1581, but regained by the Dutch in 1592. Steenwijk was a separate municipality until 2001, when it merged with Brederwiede and IJsselham. The new municipality was first named "Steenwijk", but was renamed in 2003 to "Steenwijkerland". IJssel
The IJssel (; nds-nl, Iessel(t) ) is a Dutch distributary of the river Rhine that flows northward and ultimately discharges into the IJsselmeer (before the 1932 completion of the Afsluitdijk known as the Zuiderzee), a North Sea natural harbour. It more immediately flows into the east-south channel around the Flevopolder, Flevoland which is kept at 3 metres below sea level. This body of water is then pumped up into the IJsselmeer. It is sometimes called the Gelderse IJssel (; "Gueldern IJssel") to distinguish it from the Hollandse IJssel. It is in the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel. The Romans knew the river as Isala. Blankenham
Blankenham is a village in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Steenwijkerland. Until 1973, it was a separate municipality. History Blankenham is village on the dike along the former Zuiderzee. It was named after Frederick of Blankenheim, the Prince-Bishop of Utrecht who gave the villagers permission to built a church and establish an independent parish. The village was severely effected by floods in 1776 and 1825. In 1840, it was home to 282 people. The Dutch Reformed Church was finished in 1893, and is near a little pond which is a remnant of the 1825 flood. It replaced an 1816 church which was lost due to a lightning strike. The canon dates from 1817, and was last fired in 1964. There used to be two, but one was donated to the museum in Schokland. On 31 December 1963, the canon was stolen and moved to Luttelgeest.
