The International Federation of Model Auto Racing (IFMAR) is the world governing body of professional radio controlled car racing. The organization was created in 1979 by professional racer and RC model entrepreneur Ted Longshaw. At that time, many different governing bodies operated under their own rules throughout the world. IFMAR was conceived as a way to bring the different, fragmented organizations under a single, governing body. IFMAR's constitution also promotes international friendship and sportsmanship. Each of the member blocs organises the IFMAR World Championship event on behalf of IFMAR. Masami Hirosaka is perhaps the world's most distinguished racer. Masami Hirosaka
is a Japanese radio controlled car driver who is considered to be the world's most successful with a record fourteen International Federation of Model Auto Racing, IFMAR World Championships in 1/12 scale electric, 1/10 scale Pan, 1/10 scale 2WD off road and 1/10 scale 4WD, all electric. Hirosaka's peers have nicknamed him "Master Masami". He was considered to be one of the highest paid drivers in RC racing, until he retired from the activity. His last IFMAR race was the 2008 world championship in Thailand. His retirement ceremony was on May 3, 2009. Remotely Operated Auto Racers (formerly known as Radio Operated Auto Racing), abbreviated as ROAR, is the sanctioning body of competitive radio-controlled car racing in the United States and Canada. It is a US national non profit organization that promotes the sport of radio controlled model car racing. History ROAR was originally organized in 1967 By George Siposs and Norb Meyers and a small group of people dedicated to forming competitive Radio Controlled Car Racing and was the first organization in the world to sanction competitive Model Car Racing. Associated Electrics, Incorporated of Lake Forest, California is one of the world's leading manufacturers of radio controlled car, radio controlled cars, trucks and accessories. Associated Electrics is now owned by Thunder Tiger Corporation from Taiwan. The company is usually referred to as Team Associated. Early history The company was founded in 1964 by Roger Curtis and Lee Yurada, technicians at the Douglas Aircraft Company, Douglas Aerophysics Laboratory in nearby El Segundo, California. Slot cars were at the height of their popularity in Southern California at the time, so Curtis and Yurada decided to open a slot car track as a side business. Their experience in fabricating aircraft parts soon led them into producing slot car parts and accessories. Ted Longshaw
Oswald Edgar "Ted" Longshaw (13 April 1926 – 6 September 2011) was a British businessman who is best known for his involvement in radio-controlled car racing and the foundation of governing bodies for the sport, IFMAR (international), EFRA (Europe), FEMCA (far east) and BRCA (UK). Early life and military career Longshaw left school at 14 to work for his father, a delivery van driver who operated in Peckham. During the Second World War, on his 17th birthday in 1943, Ted enlisted with the Royal Navy where he first undertook his basic naval training at HMS Royal Arthur, Skegness; then was based at , Doonfoot specialising as a signalman. By 1944, as Signalman 1st Class, he joined HMS Wager, a newly built W class destroyer, serving there for 21 months and graduating to Leading Signalman by 1945. European Federation Of Radio Operated Model Automobiles
The Europäische Föderation Radiogesteuerter Automodelle (EFRA), better known in English as the European Federation of Radio Operated Model Automobiles, is the governing body of radio-controlled car racing in Europe. History Setup in May 1973, EFRA's original members were France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. They established a set of rules which did was not approved by the British. After discussion, BRCA's Ron Moody withdrew their membership. The idea of organisation was to regulate radio-controlled car racing though Europe. Although each member country would retain their own governing body, EFRA would try to make homogenous rules which form the basis of most of the rules in each member country, and also for European championship racing. British Radio Car Association
The British Radio Car Association (or BRCA) is an organisation that promotes the construction and racing of all types of radio controlled cars in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1971 by Ted Longshaw and Keith Plested, who was also the founder of PB Racing, a manufacturer of RC cars; they coordinate BRCA affiliated clubs in the UK, and offer insurance for any accidents that might occur. They also organise regional and national racing events for various classes. Each year the BRCA produces a rules booklet for every UK racing class, such as 1:10 Electric touring cars, 1:8 Nitro circuit cars and 1:16 Electric micro offroad cars with specific rules as regard to maximum and minimum dimensions, and homologated motors and cells.
