ICTU
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (often abbreviated to just Congress or ICTU), formed in 1959 by the merger of the Irish Trades Union Congress (founded in 1894) and the Congress of Irish Unions (founded in 1945), is a national trade union centre, the umbrella organisation to which trade unions in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland affiliate. Influence There are currently 55 trade unions with membership of Congress, representing about 600,000 members in the Republic of Ireland. Trade union members represent 35.1% of the Republic's workforce. This is a significant decline since the 55.3% recorded in 1980 and the 38.5% reported in 2003. In the Republic, roughly 50% of union members are in the public sector. Social Partnership
Social partnership ( ga, Pairtíocht sóisialta) is the term used for the tripartite, triennial national pay agreements reached in Ireland. The process was initiated in 1987, following a period of high inflation and weak economic growth which led to increased emigration and unsustainable government borrowing and national debt. Strike and wage moderation were important outcomes of the agreements, and this has been seen as a significant contributor to the 'Celtic Tiger' phenomenon. Prior to this, agreement bargaining had been on a local level since 1981; in the previous decade national employer-union deals and 'National Understandings' were the norm, but came under increased pressure. Kevin Callinan
Kevin Callinan (born 1959 or 1960) is an Irish trade unionist. Callinan grew up in the Northside area of Dublin, and began his working life with Dublin Corporation, as a library assistant. He joined the Local Government and Public Services Union, and later began working for the union. When the union became part of the new Irish Municipal, Public and Civil Trade Union (IMPACT), he was steadily promoted until he became deputy general secretary. In 2018, IMPACT became part of the new Fórsa union, and Callinan continued as deputy general secretary. The following year, he was elected to the top post of general secretary. Later in the year, he was also elected as secretary of the public service committee Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU). He was elected as president of ICTU in 2021, in which post he called for increased wealth taxes to fund improved public services. Patricia King (trade Unionist)
Patricia King is an Irish trade unionist. Born in County Wicklow, King worked as a trade union organiser for many years before being appointed as the Dublin organiser of SIPTU (Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union) in 2004. In this role, she was centrally involved in a major dispute involving workers at Irish Ferries in 2006 and 2007. In 2010, King was elected as vice-president of SIPTU, the most prominent post held by a woman in the union to that point. She also served on the RTÉ Authority, the National Roads Authority, the Dublin Airport Authority and the Apprenticeship Council. The FDA, formerly The Association of First Division Civil Servants, is a trade union for UK senior and middle management civil servants and public service professionals founded in 1919.
