IAR-821
The IAR-821 was an agricultural aircraft built in Romania in the 1960s. It was a conventional low-wing monoplane with fixed, tailwheel undercarriage. Development The IAR-821 is an agricultural crop sprayer and duster aircraft. The design was completed under the leadership of eng. Radu Manicatide in 1967, at IMFCA Bucharest (Institutul de Mecanica Fluidelor si Cercetari Aerospatiale - Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Aerospace Research). It was built at IRMA (Intreprinderea de Reparatii Material Aeronautic - Enterprise for Aeronautical Material Repairement), in Bucharest. A small series of 20 aircraft was produced in 1968 and 1969, plus a single example of a trainer aircraft designated IAR-821B that had a second cockpit installed in place of the IAR-821's chemical tank, and was equipped with a new chemical tank of smaller capacity. Romaero, formerly Intreprinderea de Reparatii Material Aeronautic or IRMA ('Enterprise for the Repair of Aeronautical Material'), is a Romanian aerospace company, headquartered in the Băneasa neighborhood of Bucharest. In recent years, it has largely concentrated on aircraft repairs as well as component manufacturing for overseas companies. The company was founded by Royal Decree in 1920 under the name ''ASAM''. Radu Manicatide
Radu Manicatide (April 17, 1912 – March 18, 2004) was a Romanian engineer and aircraft constructor. He was born in Iași and grew up in Bucharest, in a house on Luterană Street. In 1926, at age 14, Manicatide built his first plane (the RM-1, a single-seat glider) in his backyard, and flew with it on the street for a few meters. This was followed in 1927 by the RM-2 glider, which he tested at Sinaia. He obtained a pilot license in 1930. From 1931 to 1937 he earned an engineering degree from the University Politehnica of Bucharest, and then pursued his studies at École supérieure des techniques aéronautiques et de construction automobile (ESTACA), in Paris. In 1932 he constructed his first plane, the RM-4, with a weight of and a maximum speed of . Industria Aeronautică Română (IAR) (now IAR S.A. Brașov) or Romanian Aeronautic Industry in English, is a Romanian aerospace manufacturer. It is based in Ghimbav, near Brașov, Romania. IAR was founded in 1925 with the aid of the Romanian government, which sought to reduce reliance on foreign companies to supply the Royal Romanian Air Force with aircraft and associated equipment. In addition to its designs, the company built numerous foreign-designed aircraft under license as well. NACA Cowling
The NACA cowling is a type of aerodynamic fairing used to streamline radial engines installed on airplanes. It was developed by Fred Weick of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1927. It was a major advance in aerodynamic drag reduction, and paid for its development and installation costs many times over due to the gains in fuel efficiency that it enabled. History and design The NACA cowling enhanced speed through drag reduction while delivering improved engine cooling. The cowling consists of a symmetric, circular airfoil that is wrapped around the engine. In a normal planar airfoil, like a wing, it is the difference in airspeed, and their associated changes in pressure, on the top and bottom of the surface that produces lift.
