Hypostominae
The Hypostominae are a subfamily of catfishes of the family Loricariidae. Most members are restricted to tropical and subtropical South America, but there are also several species (in genera ''Ancistrus'', '' Chaetostoma'', ''Lasiancistrus'', '' Leptoancistrus'' and ''Hemiancistrus'') in southern Central America. ''Hypostomus plecostomus'', which is popular in the aquarium trade, has been introduced to several regions far from its native range. Studies conducted with representatives of some genera of Hypostominae showed, within this group, the diploid number ranges from 2n = 52 to 2n = 80. However, the supposed wide karyotypic diversity the family Loricariidae or the subfamily Hypostominae would present is almost exclusively restricted to the genus ''Hypostomus'', and the species from the other genera had a conserved diploid number. Loricariidae
The Loricariidae is the largest family of catfish (order Siluriformes), with 92 genera and just over 680 species. Loricariids originate from freshwater habitats of Costa Rica, Panama, and tropical and subtropical South America. These fish are noted for the bony plates covering their bodies and their suckermouths. Several genera are sold as " plecos", notably the suckermouth catfish, ''Hypostomus plecostomus'', and are popular as aquarium fish. Corymbophanes
''Corymbophanes'' is a genus of armored catfish native to South America where they are only known from Guyana. ''Corymbophanes'' was originally placed in its own tribe Corymbophanini, but the first comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analysis of the subfamily Hypostominae found ''Corymbophanes'' to be nested within the tribe Ancistrini. Taxonomy ''Corymbophanes'' and its type species, ''C. andersoni'', were first described in 1909 by Carl H. Eigenmann. In 2000, they were redescribed along with the description of a new species, ''C. kaiei''. In 2004, the tribe Corymbophanini was erected. ''Corymbophanes'' represents an old lineage as it lacks many of the characteristics of the rest of the subfamily Hypostominae. This group probably has a basal position within the subfamily. Rhinelepini
Rhinelepini is a tribe of fishes in the subfamily Hypostominae of the armored suckermouth catfish family Loricariidae. Taxonomy This tribe is a well diagnosed monophyletic group currently containing three genera: '' Pogonopoma'', '' Pseudorinelepis'', and '' Rhinelepis''. When the tribe was first described, ''Pogonopomoides'' was a valid genus, but it is now a synonym of ''Pogonopoma''. ''Pseudorinelepis'' is the most basal, and ''Rhinelepis'' and ''Pogonopoma'' are more derived sister groups. Appearance and anatomy Rhinelepini species are generally medium to large-sized Loricariids. Pterygoplichthys
''Pterygoplichthys'', sometimes collectively known as janitor fish, is a genus of South American armored catfishes. These fish are commonly known as sailfin armoured catfish or sailfin plecs, especially in the aquarium trade. Etymology ''Pterygoplichthys'' is derived from the Greek ''πτέρυγ-'' (''pteryg-''), meaning "wing", (''hoplon'') - weapon and ''ἰχθύς'' (''ichthys'') meaning "fish". ''Panaque nigrolineatus'', the royal panaque, royal plec, or royal pleco, is an herbivorous freshwater armored catfish native to Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela where it occurs in the Orinoco and Amazon basins.
