Hyperoglyphe Perciformis
''Hyperoglyphe perciformis'', the barrelfish is a primarily bathypelagic species of ray-finned fish belonging to the family Centrolophidae. The barrelfish is found in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Despite being in the medusafish family, the barrelfish does not associate with jellyfish or other medusae. It is considered a deep-water gamefish. Description The barrelfish primarily has a brown to black coloration on their back, fading to gray on the sides of the body. The dorsal fin normally has 8 spines, and 20 to 22 soft rays. Barrelfish are relatively deep bodied, and have large eyes adapted for sight in the bathypelagic zone. Younger barrelfish have smaller eyes compared to adults, as they do not inhabit deeper water until they grow larger. The young barrelfish found in the upper water columns are often no larger than 1 ft, but adults can grow up to 3 ft in length and weigh up to 27 lbs. Distribution The native range of barrelfish includes the subtropical and temperate waters of ...

Hyperoglyphe Antarctica
''Hyperoglyphe antarctica'', the Antarctic butterfish, bluenose warehou, deepsea trevally, blue eye trevalla, blue-eye cod, bluenose sea bass, or deep sea trevalla, is a medusafish of the family '' Centrolophidae'' found in all the southern oceans, at depths of between 40 and 1,500 m. Its length is up to about 140 cm, with a maximum published weight of 60 kg. Antarctic butterfish have a dark blue body above and lighter blue below with large eyes (another name for this fish is big eye). Larger individuals have a bronze sheen along the flanks. They can grow to 1.4 m in length and over 50 kg in weight. Studies have shown that fish between 62 and 72 cm are mature and range in age between 8–12 years respectively. Mature females can produce between 2 million and 11 million eggs prior to spawning. Blue eye mainly feed on the tunicate ''Pyrosoma atlantica''. However, they will feed on a range of fish, molluscs, squid and crustaceans, and are also cannibali ...

Medusafish
Medusafishes are a family, Centrolophidae, of percomorph fishes. The family includes about 31 species. They are found in temperate and tropical waters throughout the world. Young '' Icichthys lockingtoni'' specimens are abundant in the coastal waters of the north Pacific, where they are often found in association with jellyfish, which provide them with protection from predators and opportunities to scavenge the remains of the jellyfishes' meals. Genera The following genera are classified within the family Centrolophidae: * '' Centrolophus'' Lacépède, 1802 * '' Hyperoglyphe'' Günther, 1859 * ''Icichthys'' Jordan & Gilbert, 1880 * '' Psenopsis'' Gill, 1862 * '' Schedophilus'' Cocco, 1839 * '' Seriolella'' Guichenot, 1848 * '' Tubbia'' Whitley, 1943 Timeline of genera ImageSize = width:1000px height:auto barincrement:15px PlotArea = left:10px bottom:50px top:10px right:10px Period = from:-65.5 till:10 TimeAxis = orientation:horizontal ScaleMajor = unit:year ...

Perciformes Genera
Perciformes (), also called the Percomorpha or Acanthopteri, is an order or superorder of ray-finned fish. If considered a single order, they are the most numerous order of vertebrates, containing about 41% of all bony fish. Perciformes means "perch-like". Perciformes is an Order within the Clade Percomorpha consisting of "perch-like" Percomorphans. This group comprises over 10,000 species found in almost all aquatic ecosystems. The order contains about 160 families, which is the most of any order within the vertebrates. It is also the most variably sized order of vertebrates, ranging from the ''Schindleria brevipinguis'' to the marlin in the genus ''Makaira''. They first appeared and diversified in the Late Cretaceous. Among the well-known members of this group are perch and darters (Percidae), sea bass and groupers (Serranidae). Characteristics The dorsal and anal fins are divided into anterior spiny and posterior soft-rayed portions, which may be partially or complete ...

James Leonard Brierley Smith
James Leonard Brierley Smith (26 September 1897 – 8 January 1968) was a South African ichthyologist, organic chemist, and university professor. He was the first to identify a taxidermied fish as a coelacanth, at the time thought to be long extinct. Early life Born in Graaff-Reinet, 26 September 1897, Smith was the elder of two sons of Joseph Smith and his wife, Emily Ann Beck. Educated at country schools at Noupoort, De Aar, and Aliwal North, he finally matriculated in 1914 from the Diocesan College, Rondebosch. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1916 and a Master of Science degree in chemistry at Stellenbosch University in 1918. Smith went to the United Kingdom, where he received his PhD at Cambridge University in 1922. After returning to South Africa, he became senior lecturer and later an associate professor of organic chemistry at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. From 1922 to 1937, he was married to Henr ...
