Hyder Valley
The Hyder Valley is a 20-mile (32 km) long valley section of the Gila River Valley west of Hyder on the Gila River. The valley is located north of Gila River in southwest Arizona in the northwestern Sonoran Desert. The Park Valley, which crosses the Gila borders to the southwest; the Hyder Valley is the access route to the Dendora Valley northeast which is on the western border of the Painted Rock Dam and Reservoir. The Hyder Valley lies on the northwest side of the Gila River, and both trend southwest–northeast. The Palomas Mountains are on the west, and the Palomas Plain, which drains three other mountain ranges, and the eastern portion of the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, lies to the north; Face Mountain and the Gila Bend Mountains are northeast. Gila River Valley
The Gila River Valley is a multi-sectioned valley of the Gila River, located primarily in Arizona. The Gila River forms in western New Mexico and flows west across southeastern, south-central, and southwestern Arizona; it changes directions as it progresses across the state, and defines specific areas and valleys. The central portion of the river flows through the southern Phoenix valley region (the '' Salt River Valley'' joins the Gila River Valley in this area), and the final sections in southwestern Arizona form smaller, irrigated valleys, such as Dome Valley, Mohawk Valley, and Hyder Valley. Hyder, Arizona
The Camp Hyder was a sub camp of the US Army, Desert Training Center in Riverside County, California. The main headquarters for the Desert Training Center was Camp Young, this is where General Patton's 3rd Armored Division was stationed. Camp Hyder is miles south of Hyder, Arizona. The camp was just north of the Gila River. Camp Hyder is miles east of Yuma, Arizona, near Camp Horn. Camp Hyder was built at the site of an old 1890s military base. Trained at Camp Hyder, in 1943, for six months was the 77th Infantry Division from April 1943 to September 1943. Then the 104th Infantry Division moved in for training. Unlike the other camps, no large tank activity was done. The camp was built by The 369th Engineer Regiment. Camp Hyder had its own rail station at which most troops arrived. Gila River
The Gila River (; O'odham ima Keli Akimel or simply Akimel, Quechan: Haa Siʼil, Maricopa language: Xiil) is a tributary of the Colorado River flowing through New Mexico and Arizona in the United States. The river drains an arid watershed of nearly that lies mainly within the U.S., but also extends into northern Sonora, Mexico. Indigenous peoples have lived along the river for at least 2,000 years, establishing complex agricultural societies before European exploration of the region began in the 16th century. However, European Americans did not permanently settle the Gila River watershed until the mid-19th century. The Park Valley of Arizona is a small, northwest by southeast trending valley centered on the Gila River in central-east Yuma County. The southeast border of the valley is the northern Sentinel Plain of Maricopa County which drains northwestwards toward the Gila River Valley. Dendora Valley
The Dendora Valley is a small valley on the Gila River west of Painted Rock Dam and Reservoir, Arizona, United States. The valley is north of the river, and is the valley west of the north–south Painted Rock Mountains which form the western end of the Painted Rock Reservoir. The Dendora Valley is only about long. The Gila Bend Mountains form the northern border from east to west, of both Dendora Valley, and the Painted Rock Reservoir adjacent eastwards; this is the famous Gila Bend formed by the Gila River as it changes direction to south, then west entering the reservoir. The Painted Rock Dam is an earthfill embankment dam located west of Gila Bend, Arizona. It is primarily used for flood control purposes. Description The Painted Rock Dam was constructed during a 3-year period from 1957–1960 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to help control seasonal floods on the lower reaches of the Gila River. The river had no significant impediments between the Colorado River and the Coolidge Dam hundreds of miles upstream. In this stretch the river receives several tributaries, including the Hassayampa, Agua Fria rivers, and most importantly the Salt River and its major tributary, the Verde River. Due to a relatively large watershed of , more than half of which is unregulated, the flood threat to small farming communities downstream on the Gila River is large, and seasonal flooding of these areas prior to the construction of the dam was significant. Palomas Mountains
The Palomas Mountains (Yavapai: Hakiñur) is a mountain range in the Sonoran Desert of southwest Arizona. Palomas is the Spanish word for white-winged doves which were found in the settlement of Palomas in the 1890's. The range is found around NE of Yuma, Arizona, and around north of the town of Dateland, in eastern Yuma County. Over a narrow valley toward the north are the Tank Mountains, which frame a nonstop belt of bedrock west into the Kofa Mountains. Toward the west lies Neversweat Ridge, the easternmost known presentation of Orocopia Schist. Toward the east and northeast is the Palomas Plain, and toward the south is the Gila River. Kofa National Wildlife Refuge
The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is located in Arizona in the southwestern United States, northeast of Yuma and southeast of Quartzsite. The refuge, established in 1939 to protect desert bighorn sheep, encompasses over of the Yuma Desert region of the Sonoran Desert. Broad, gently sloping foothills as well as the sharp, needlepoint peaks of the Kofa Mountains are found in the rugged refuge. The small, widely scattered waterholes attract a surprising number of water birds for a desert area. A wide variety of plant life is also found throughout the refuge.
