Hungry Hearts (1922 Film)
''Hungry Hearts'' (1922) is an American film based on stories by Anzia Yezierska about Jewish immigrants to the Lower East Side of New York City. The film was directed by E. Mason Hopper, produced by Samuel Goldwyn, and starred Helen Ferguson and E. Alyn Warren. Plot As described in a film publication, the Levin family escapes from Europe and finds refuge in New York City, where everyone in the family must work. Sara (Ferguson) finds janitor work and meets David (Washburn), nephew of their landlord Rosenblatt (George Siegmann). David falls in love with Sara and teaches her to read and write. He looks forward to when he can open a law office, be free of his uncle, and marry the girl. The uncle intervenes and parts the lovers, and then raises the rent of the Levin family without mercy. The stress causes Sara's mother to become temporarily insane and damage the walls of the apartment, and Rosenblatt takes them to court. Samuel Goldwyn
Samuel Goldwyn (born Szmuel Gelbfisz; yi, שמואל געלבפֿיש; August 27, 1882 (claimed) January 31, 1974), also known as Samuel Goldfish, was a Polish-born American film producer. He was best known for being the founding contributor and executive of several motion picture studios in Hollywood. He was awarded the 1973 Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (1947) and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1958). Early life Goldwyn was likely born in July 1879, although he claimed his birthday to be August 27, 1882. He was born as Szmuel Gelbfisz in Warsaw to Polish Jewish Hasidic parents, Aaron Dawid Gelbfisz (1859–1894), a peddler, and his wife, Hanna Frymet (''née'' Fiszhaut ; 1860–1925). The National Center for Jewish Film is a non-profit motion picture archive, distributor, and resource center. It houses the largest collection of Jewish-themed film and video outside of Israel. The Samuel Goldwyn Company was an American independent film company founded by Samuel Goldwyn Jr., the son of the famous Hollywood mogul, Samuel Goldwyn, in 1978.
