Hungary In The Eurovision Song Contest 1997
Hungary was represented by boyband V.I.P., with the song "Miért kell, hogy elmenj?", at the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, which took place on 3 May in Dublin. "Miért kell, hogy elmenj?" was chosen as the Hungarian entry at the national final on 28 February. Before Eurovision National final The national final was organised by broadcaster Magyar Televízió (MTV) and was held at their studios in Budapest, hosted by István Vágó. 19 songs took part with the winner being chosen by voting from five regional juries, who each awarded 10-7-5-3-1 to their top five songs. At Eurovision Heading into the final of the contest, RTÉ reported that bookmakers ranked the entry 8th out of the 25 entries. On the night of the final V.I.P. performed 19th in the running order, following Malta and preceding Russia. The Eurovision Song Contest 1997 was the 42nd edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest, held on 3 May 1997 at the Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (RTÉ) and presented by Irish television and radio presenter Carrie Crowley and Irish singer Ronan Keating, the contest was held in Ireland following the country's victory at the with the song "The Voice" by Eimear Quinn. The 1997 contest was the seventh edition to be staged in Ireland, as well as the fourth to be produced by RTÉ in five years. István Vágó
István Vágó (14 February 1949 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian television host and political activist, best known as the host of "Legyen ön is Milliomos!" the Hungarian version of ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?''. Life Vágó was born and raised in Budapest. His original profession was a chemist, but he found a job working for Medimpex import-export company. Vágó speaks at least five languages. When Vágó started his career he wanted to create a political show, but it was impossible to create one like he wanted (dealing with internal politics, analyzing decisions of the system) at the time so he ended up hosting quiz shows. Hungary has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 17 times since making its debut in . Hungary attempted to participate in but failed to qualify from ''Kvalifikacija za Millstreet'', a special qualifying competition set up for seven former Eastern Bloc countries.
