Hundred Of Wokurna
The Hundred of Wokurna is a cadastral unit of hundred located in the Mid North of South Australia west of the Barunga Range. It is one of the 16 hundreds of the County of Daly and was proclaimed by Governor Anthony Musgrave on the last day of 1874. The hamlet of Wokurna lies near the south-eastern border of the hundred and locality bounds cover more than a quarter of the hundred. A large portion of Port Broughton occupies the hundred as well as small portions of Ward Hill and Mundoora. Local government The District Council of Broughton was established in 1888 by promulgation of the District Councils Act 1887, bringing the hundred under local administration for the first time. The council area included the Hundred of Wokurna as well as three adjacent hundreds. The County of Daly is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia. It was proclaimed in 1862 and named for Governor Dominick Daly. It covers the northern half of Yorke Peninsula stretching just east of the Hummock-Barunga Range in the west and just past the Broughton River in the north. Barunga Range
The Barunga Range is a range of hills in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges starting near Clements Gap and Merriton in South Australia's Mid North. At the range's southern end it merges with Hummock Range at Barunga Gap, approximately south west of Snowtown. The name 'Barunga' derives from an indigenous term meaning "gap in the range". The Barunga and Hummock ranges are host to the Clements Gap and Snowtown wind farms. Etymology According to the Australian Biospecimen Network Association, ''Barunga'' is an indigenous term meaning "gap in the range", but South Australian historian Geoffrey Manning instead states it means "place for meat". The term was also used to name Barunga Hill, north west of Snowtown, and Barunga Creek, which flows off from Barunga Range to the south west of Snowtown. District Council Of Mundoora
Mundoora is a settlement in South Australia, 16 km inland from Port Broughton, to which it was connected by the horse-drawn Port Broughton tramway around 1876. Its tram, dubbed "The Pie Cart", which was described as a "kind of second-hand coffin drawn by one horse" and still in operation in 1923 was later relegated to the Railways Museum and the line dismantled. At the 2006 census, Mundoora had a population of 248. Governance The first local government established in the area was the District Council of Broughton, later called District Council of Redhill. Mundoora was never served by the historic District Council of Mundoora, which was instead based at Port Broughton, to the west. Today the township of Mundoora is in the District Council of Barunga West but the locality is at the meeting point of three local government areas, the Port Pirie Regional Council spanning the north east and Wakefield Regional Council spanning the south east corners of the locality. District Councils Act 1887
The District Councils Act 1887 was an act of the Parliament of South Australia. It received assent on 9 December 1887, and its provisions came into effect when proclaimed by Governor William C. F. Robinson on 5 January 1888. The legislation introduced local government to many areas of South Australia in which it had not previously existed, especially in the north and west of the state, and involved substantial change to many existing municipalities. In total, it involved the creation of 20 new councils, the expansion of 35 existing councils into lands previously without local government, and the amalgamation of 17 pre-existing councils into eight larger councils. The remaining existing councils were left unchanged, as were individual incorporated towns. The legislation fixed both a minimum number of five councillors and a maximum of ten councillors for District Councils across the state. Ward Hill, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Ward Hill is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the west coast of Yorke Peninsula immediately adjoining Spencer Gulf about north-west of the Adelaide city centre. Its boundaries were created in October 1998 for the “long established name” and included the Webling Bay Shack Area. The name was derived from the hill now located within the locality. Its coastline with Spencer Gulf includes at its northern end, an inlet known as Mundoora Arm and a channel known as Hamilton Lagoons. As of 2015, land within the locality was zoned for agriculture while a strip of land along its coastline was zoned for conservation. Port Broughton, South Australia
Port Broughton is a small South Australian town located at the northern extent of the Yorke Peninsula on the east coast of Spencer Gulf. It is situated about 170 km north-west of Adelaide, and 56 km south of Port Pirie. At the , the town of Port Broughton had a population of 1,034. The close proximity to Adelaide (two hours' drive) makes it a popular tourist destination, with the number of people in town swelling to over 4000 in the summer holidays. Anthony Musgrave
Sir Anthony Musgrave (31 August 1828 – 9 October 1888) was a colonial administrator and governor. He died in office as Governor of Queensland in 1888. Early life He was born at St John's, Antigua, the third of 11 children of Anthony Musgrave and Mary Harris Sheriff. After education in Antigua and Great Britain, he was appointed private secretary to Robert James Mackintosh, governor-in-chief of the Leeward Islands in 1854. He was recognised for his "capacity and zeal", and quickly promoted, administering in turn the British West Indies territories of Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
