Hughes Basin
Hughes Basin () is a large basinlike névé in the Britannia Range of Antarctica which is bounded except to the south by the Ravens Mountains, Mount Henderson, Mount Olympus and Mount Quackenbush. The feature is long and the ice surface descends north–south from near Mount Olympus to near Darnell Nunatak, where there is discharge to Byrd Glacier. It was named after Terence J. Hughes of the Department of Geological Sciences and the Institute of Quaternary Studies at the University of Maine, Orono, who made an intensive study of the Byrd Glacier in 1978–79, entailing photogrammetric determination of the elevation of the ice surface and its velocity, radio-echo sounding from LC-130 The Lockheed LC-130 is a ski-equipped United States Air Force variant of the C-130 Hercules used in the Arctic and Antarctic. Névé
Névé is a young, granular type of snow which has been partially melted, refrozen and compacted, yet precedes the form of ice. This type of snow is associated with glacier formation through the process of ''nivation''. Névé that survives a full season of ablation turns into firn, which is both older and slightly denser. Firn eventually becomes glacial ice – the long-lived, compacted ice that glaciers are composed of. Glacier formation can take days to years depending on freeze-thaw factors. Névé is annually observed in skiing slopes, and is generally disliked as an icy falling zone. Névé has a minimum density of 500 kg/m3, which is roughly half of the density of liquid water at 1 atm. The Britannia Range is an Antarctic mountain range bounded by the Hatherton and Darwin glaciers on the north and the Byrd Glacier on the south, westward of the Ross Ice Shelf. Ravens Mountains () is a symmetrical group of mountains on the west side of Hughes Basin in Britannia Range, Antarctica The mountains are 12 nautical miles (22 km) long and rise to 2130 m in Doll Peak. Named after the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard which has provided logistical support to the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) for several years beginning in 1988. Mount Olympus (; el, Όλυμπος, Ólympos, also , ) is the highest mountain in Greece. Darnell Nunatak
Darnell Nunatak () is a prominent nunatak, high, standing northwest of Mount Rummage in the southwestern part of the Britannia Range. Byrd Glacier
The Byrd Glacier is a major glacier in Antarctica, about long and wide, draining an extensive area of the polar plateau and flowing eastward between the Britannia Range and Churchill Mountains to discharge into the Ross Ice Shelf at Barne Inlet. Its valley below the glacier used to be recognised as one of the lowest points not to be covered by water on Earth (assuming ice doesn't count as water), reaching below sea level. Publius Terentius Afer (; – ), better known in English as Terence (), was a Roman African playwright during the Roman Republic. His comedies were performed for the first time around 166–160 BC. Orono, Maine
Orono () is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. Located on the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers, it was first settled by American colonists in 1774. They named it in honor of Chief Joseph Orono, a sachem of the indigenous Penobscot nation who long occupied this territory. In the nineteenth century, the town became a center of the lumber industry. LC-130
The Lockheed LC-130 is a ski-equipped United States Air Force variant of the C-130 Hercules used in the Arctic and Antarctic. Ten are currently in service with the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard. Design and development The LC-130 started as a prototype model developed by modifying a ''C-130A'' with skis in 1956. After testing in 1957, 12 additional C-130A models were modified with skis and hydraulics under the designation of ''C-130D''. In 1959 the first four factory equipped, ski-based Hercules were produced under the Navy designation of UV-1L. These C-130s are USAF C-130B models. Later in the program the designation was changed from UV-1L to C-130BL. This designation was again later changed to LC-130F when aircraft nomenclature was standardized for all services by the U. S.
