Hugh Martin
Hugh Martin (August 11, 1914 – March 11, 2011) was an American musical theater and film composer, arranger, vocal coach, and playwright. He was best known for his score for the 1944 MGM musical ''Meet Me in St. Louis'', in which Judy Garland sang three Martin songs, "The Boy Next Door (song), The Boy Next Door," "The Trolley Song," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." The last of these has become a Christmas season standard in the United States and around the English-speaking world. Martin became a close friend of Garland and was her accompanist at many of her concert performances in the 1950s, including her appearances at the Palace Theater (Broadway), Palace Theater. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is a song written in 1943 by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical ''Meet Me in St. Louis''. Frank Sinatra later recorded a version with modified lyrics. In 2007, ASCAP ranked it the third most performed Christmas song during the preceding five years that had been written by ASCAP members. In 2004 it finished at No. 76 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs rankings of the top tunes in American cinema. Palace Theater (Broadway)
The Palace Theatre is a Broadway theater at 1564 Broadway, facing Times Square, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Designed by Milwaukee architects Kirchoff & Rose, the theater was funded by Martin Beck and opened in 1913. From its opening to about 1929, the Palace was considered among vaudeville performers as the flagship of Benjamin Franklin Keith and Edward Franklin Albee II's organization. Timothy Gray (September 5, 1926 – March 17, 2007) was an American songwriter, author, singer and director, remembered for his partnership with Hugh Martin which produced '' High Spirits'', a musical based on Noël Coward's play, '' Blithe Spirit''. Biography Gray, whose birth name was John Baker Gray, was born in Chicago and became a performer in vaudeville at the age of 16. He later performed on Broadway in musicals, including ''As the Girls Go'', and '' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'', and then television, before becoming a writer and composer. Timothy Gray also wrote the score of the London show ''Love From Judy'' and collaborated on '' High Spirits'' with Hugh Martin. ''High Spirits'' is a musical theatre, musical with a book, lyrics, and music by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray, based on the play ''Blithe Spirit (play), Blithe Spirit'' by Noël Coward, about a man's problems caused by the spirit of his dead wife. Martin and Gray adhered closely to Coward's original text, although they expanded the Mediumship, medium's character to make it the star role. The playwright was delighted with their adaptation, then entitled ''Faster Than Sound'', and agreed to direct it himself. Based on Sturges' screenplay for the 1935 film '' The Good Fairy'', which in turn is based on the 1930 play of the same name by Ferenc Molnár as translated by Jane Hinton, the musical focuses on Janette, who experiences various adventures, including love with young artist Paul Dumont, when she abandons her tour group during a visit to Paris.
