Hugh Duncan
Hugh Duncan (26 August 1898 – 31 August 1964) was a New Zealand cricketer. He played nine first-class matches for Otago between 1921 and 1925. A right-handed batsman who sometimes opened the innings, Duncan's highest score was 67 against Canterbury in 1922–23. He was a member of Otago's first Plunket Shield-winning team in 1924–25. After Duncan's first-class career finished, he returned to his home town of Auckland, where he captained the Parnell club to the premiership several times. The Auckland cricket team represent the Auckland region and are one of six New Zealand domestic first class cricket teams. Governed by the Auckland Cricket Association they are the most successful side having won 28 Plunket Shield titles, ten wins in The Ford Trophy and the Super Smash four times. The side currently play their home games at Eden Park Outer Oval. The limited overs side, known as the Auckland Aces, have a predominantly light blue kit with a navy and white trim. The captain of a cricket team, often referred to as the skipper, is the appointed leader, having several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of the other players. New Zealand has had a domestic first-class cricket championship since the 1906–07 season. Since the 2009–10 season it has been known by its original name of the Plunket Shield. History The Plunket Shield competition was instigated in October 1906 with the donation of a shield by William Plunket, 5th Baron Plunket, who was the Governor-General of New Zealand from 1904 to 1910.
