Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok Funicular
The Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok funicular ( sk, Pozemná lanová dráha Starý Smokovec – Hrebienok) is a funicular between Starý Smokovec and the tourist complex at the summit of Hrebienok in the High Tatras, Slovakia. History The first rolling stock for the funicular was ordered from the legendary Ganz Works by Matejka és Kriger (Matejka Vince and Kriger Vilmos), a company based in Poprad (then part of Hungary, within Austria-Hungary). After several years of preparations, the first tourist passengers travelled by funicular on 20 December 1908. The funicular operated on the original track until 1967. Great reconstruction of the line took place in 1967. New technology for the entire line was provided by the Italian Ceretti-Tanfani company. The passenger capacity of the new funicular cars increased from 45 to 130 passengers. Starý Smokovec
Starý Smokovec (; german: Altschmecks; hu, Ótátrafüred; pl, Stary Smokowiec) is a part of the town of Vysoké Tatry (town), Vysoké Tatry in northern Slovakia in the Tatras. Its name is pronounced approximately "Star-EE Smoke-oh-vets", meaning "Old Smokovec". Starý Smokovec is a popular resort for skiing and hiking. It also forms the junction of the Tatra Electric Railway train line, connecting Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso. Amongst the more important buildings in the district are the sanatorium and the Grand Hotel (established in 1904). It is connected by the Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok funicular to the small ski resort of Hrebienok at 1285 m. The Tatra Mountains (), Tatras, or Tatra (''Tatry'' either in Slovak language, Slovak () or in Polish language, Polish () - ''plurale tantum''), are a series of mountains within the Western Carpathians that form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. They are the highest mountains the Carpathians. The Tatras are distinct from the Low Tatras ( sk, Nízke Tatry), a separate Slovak mountain range further south. Tatra Electric Railway
The Tatra Electric Railway ( sk, Tatranská elektrická železnica), colloquially Tatra Railway, is an electrified (1500 V DC) single track narrow gauge railway in the Slovak part of the Tatra mountains. History After the completion of the Košice-Bohumín Railway in 1871 and of Poprad - Kežmarok in 1892, the High Tatras were easier to access, and tourism expanded, which required accessibility.
