The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets football team represents Howard Payne University in college football at the NCAA Division III level. The Yellow Jackets are members of the American Southwest Conference (ASC), fielding its team in the ASC since 1996. The Yellow Jackets play their home games at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood, Texas. Their head coach is Kevin Bachtel, who took over the position for the 2023 season. Kevin Bachtel
Kevin Bachtel is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach for Howard Payne University; a position he has held since 2023. He was the head football coach for Edgewood High School from 2016 to 2020. He also coached for Wills Point High School and Grand Saline High School. Vance Gibson (born July 20, 1953) is an American football coach. Gibson was the 18th head football coach at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, serving for 13 seasons, from 1992 to 2004, and compiling a record of Gibson 89–42. From 2005 to 2018, he was the head football coach at Frisco High School in Frisco, Texas. From 2019-2021, He was the offensive line coach at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. Gibson graduated from Sherman High School in Sherman, Texas in 1971. Bill Anderson (American Football, Born 1925)
Billy Joe Anderson (July 20, 1925 – February 20, 2013) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Howard Payne University from 1988 to 1991, compiling a record of 24–18. Anderson was born in Erath County, Texas, on July 20, 1925. During World War II he trained as Boeing B-29 Superfortress, B-29 tail gunner in the United States Army Air Forces, but did not serve overseas. After the war, he attended Pepperdine University, where he played college football from 1947 to 1949 before graduating in 1950. He then returned to his home state of Texas and coached football at a number of high schools. He later coached at Abilene Christian University, West Texas State University—now West Texas A&M University, Cisco College, and Tarleton State University. Bill Hicks (born May 16, 1940) is a former American football player and coach. He was the 15th head football at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, serving for four seasons, from 1982 to 1985, and compiling a record of 8–29–3. As a player, Hicks was an All- Southwest Conference center at Baylor University in 1961, and was named to the Baylor All-Decade team of the 1960s. Hick began his coaching career as an assistant at Texas College of Arts and Industries—now known as Texas A&M University–Kingsville and West Virginia University. He returned to the Baylor to coach in 1969 and spent over a decade there as a defensive assistant. He was elected to the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. He was the 14th head football coach for the Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, serving for three seasons, from 1979 to 1981, and compiling a record of 6–23–1. Early life and playing career Born in McKinney, Texas, Mayo spent several years of his childhood in Bakersfield, California, before returning to Texas, where he graduated from Farmersville High School in Farmersville. At Farmersville, he was an all-district selection in football, track, and baseball. He was the 13th head football coach at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, serving for seven seasons, from 1972 to 1978, compiling a record of 28–42–2. Harvey Nual "Rusty" Russell (December 4, 1895 – December 21, 1983) was an American football coach at the high school, junior college, and college level in the state of Texas. He served as the head football coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU) from 1950 to 1952 and Howard Payne University from 1962 to 1963, compiling career college football coaching record of 17–30–3.
