Howard Goodman
Howard "Happy" Goodman (November 7, 1921 – November 30, 2002) was an American gospel singer. In 1949, he founded the vocal group The Happy Goodman Family which included combinations of all eight Happy Goodman Family, Goodman siblings and his wife Vestal Goodman (née Freeman). Early life Howard was born on November 7, 1921, in Dora, Alabama, U.S., Howard was one of four children, Rusty Goodman, Rusty, Bobby and Sam Goodman, Sam, who were both also in the Happy Goodman Family. He met his wife, Vestal Goodman, and got married in 1949. Career Howard began his career with his brothers, The Happy Goodmans, Sam and Rusty, performing Contemporary Christian and Southern gospel in the 1940s, followed by Vestal Goodman, Vestal after getting married in 1949. Howard continued his southern gospel career until his death in 2002. Dora, Alabama
Dora is a city in Walker County, Alabama, Walker County, Alabama, United States. History The first settlers in the area now known as Dora were James. M. Davis, Ezekiel Morgan, and Cole Smith in the early 1830s. Later in the 1830s, homesteaders settled here. The Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad laid a line through the settlement in 1886, and called their depot "Sharon". The Magella Coal Company and the Horse Creek Coal and Coke Company were founded, and by 1890, the area was called Horse Creek and incorporated as the town of Horse Creek in 1897. By 1900, several coal mines were located nearby. There was a school, churches, businesses and doctors. The name was changed to Dora in 1906. Sam Goodman
Sam Goodman (March 19, 1931 – August 5, 1991) was an American Southern gospel singer/songwriter born in Bremen, Alabama. Goodman performed with his siblings in The Happy Goodman Family, where Sam sang baritone and first tenor. He also had a brief solo career. Life and career Goodman served in the United States Air Force, and after his discharge, joined The Happy Goodman Family. Sam acted as the group's spokesperson, and introduced the members and their songs on stage. On record albums produced by The Happy Goodman Family, Sam was known for telling comical stories about his family. The group performed at camp meetings, all night sings, churches, and on television and radio. Goodman won a Singing News Fan Award for Favorite Baritone in 1974. In 1982, Goodman received Minister's credentials with the Assemblies of God. The Happy Goodman Family split up in 1983. The Happy Goodman Family is a Southern gospel group that was founded in the 1940s by Howard Goodman (gospel singer), Howard "Happy" Goodman and performed together for several decades. The Happy Goodmans achieved significant popularity in the 1960s. In 1968, they won the first Grammy Award to be awarded for a gospel album by a gospel group. Charles F. "Rusty" Goodman (September 2, 1933 – November 11, 1990) was an American singer/songwriter in the Southern Gospel Music industry. He was a prolific composer whose many songs included "Standing in the Presence of the King", "Leavin' On My Mind", "Home", "John the Revelator", "Touch the Hand of the Lord", "Had it Not Been" "I Believe He's Coming Back" "Look for Me" and "Who Am I?" Vestal Goodman
Vestal Goodman (December 13, 1929 – December 27, 2003) was a singer who performed in the Southern gospel genre for more than half a century. She was known for her work as a solo performer and as a member of the Happy Goodman Family—which originated with her husband and his brothers and sisters—one of the pioneering groups in southern gospel music. Goodman was the fourth of six children, and she began singing in church as a child. Raised inside the Church of God, her original intent was to study for the Metropolitan Opera, but being raised in church she felt compelled to sing gospel music. She married Howard Goodman, a preacher nine years her senior, on November 7, 1949. They had a son Rick, and a daughter Vicki. They pastored churches and sang for congregations across the country.
